A friend has one. It is comparative to 300 Win Mag in just about every category. Recoil is about the same. (which is too much for me)

The main advantage is that it comes in a "short" action which is believed to be somewhat more stable than a "long" action gun.

Of course if you are handloading, it is somewhat more efficient than the longer cased cartridges. (Uses slightly less powder)

Pretty big gun for whitetails. I personally prefer a smaller bullet with less sectional density for this sized game.

Depends on what you do with I guess. Good luck deciding.

I have a kimber 300 wsm and like it alot. Dont really know what you would like to hear about it. PM me and I will answer any of your questions you may have to the best of my ability. One thing I will say is a buddy of mine has a kimber .270 WSM and I neither of us can tell the difference in the kick.

Another advantage to the WSM's is gun weight. Most manufacturers have trimmed gun weight due to the shorter action thus making a more comfortabe carry rifle. Some shooters that are recoil sensitive may require more practice to obtain accuracy due to muzzle jump in the lighter rifles. Ballistically, there is not much difference between the 270 WSM and the 300 WSM when shooting 150 grain bullets. If most of your shooting requires 150 grain or less I would go with the 270 WSM. If you shoot 150 grain + bullets I would go with the 300 WSM. I shoot a Kimber 270 WSM for deer size game and really enjoy it.

Good Luck!

Thank's Kansas and bear I do appericate the info.I am really not worred about the recoil. And as far as bullet wt the 150 grn is as light i shoot been useing the Accu bond by nosler and was impressed last year.

I think the WSM will work fine for you. Little more than you need for deer. Shells are more costly than say a 06 or 270.

I used a 300 Win mag for many years, for deer, elk and bear. Very accurate and I liked it real well. I went lighter because of shoulder problems. 270 win serves me well now.

you really like the .270 win? I don't like the way it shoots at all. may just be this gun though. i like the .300 win mag better. i'd take the .300 savage out if i could over both of those though. my .243 has always served me well too. brought down quite a few elk with it.

cowgirl580 When you say you don't like the way it shoot's wont it group well? What kind of rifle is it?My old 700 dident group well with factory load's i worked up a load for mine with the 130 balistic tip and she shoot's fine. When i got mine the trigger pull was set at 6LBS can't shoot a group with a trigger like that now i'm not telling you to start working on the trigger it would be best to find a gunsmith to work the trigger for you.Work up a handload you might suprised what she will do.

Cowgirl, Good for you with the 300 Mag. I'm 6'2 200 lbs and it kicked my a$$. But that is a elk killing round. 8)

Don't you think that the 243 is light for elk?

rattler-it patterend well, but i didn't like the kick or the way it felt. then again, i'd only shot it a few times before. completely missed my elk with it. the .270 isn't mine, i borrowed it from a neighbor

mnmtranching-my first year hunting i shot an elk with that .243 at about 300 yards running up a hill. kilt her dead. the only prob i have with it is it doesn't have enough behind it over 300 yards and drops a lot. that's why i started using the .300 win mag. i've been using it since i was 15 or so. we us 180 gr in the .300 win mag. this is my dad's rifle and he had it modified slightly so it doesn't kick as much as normal.

From reading what cowgirl580 wrote, I think she knows what is too light for elk and what ain't! And she even knows the limitations of her gun!

Was readin a a book by P.O. Ackley the other night. He was telling how when the military was hell bent on a .22 calber gun, they were testing it's killing power on Army mules in Puerto Rico. Yes, full grown 1000+ lb mules.

One guy was skeptical at first but came to the realization that they were just as deadly as the bigger calibers when they autopsied the results. It was all according to where they were hit. Same deal with even a 50 cal to the hip, they won't be dead.

His comment to a General was, "Sir, you can only kill them just SO dead".

I have a neighbor who shots an elk almost every year and he uses a 243. And our Roosevelt elk are bigger bodied than Cowgirl580's Rocky Mountain elk (but smaller horns, dang). It is knowing the gun's limitations. When you live in elk country and have a lot more chances to shot one a person is less likely to bang away at one that is out of range.
I now hunt elk with a 300 Win mag. The reason is I passed on a couple bulls that were marginal shots for the 30-06 I was carrying. If I was hunting with a cow tag I would have no problem using a 243 because there are a lot more opportunities and I could pick my shot.

Well  I'm not saying that a 243 won't do the job. I know well it's the bullet placement :D Just that most all elk hunters having a choice would prefer the 300 win mag.

I've hunted elk with the 300 win. You don't place the bullet right and you have a wounded elk. But the margin for error is less than with the lighter cartridge.

You don't have to take my word for it, take a poll on a elk hunting forum  ain't to many experienced elk hunters will recommend a 243. In fact most will say a 270 is a bit light.

mnmtranching,

Do you know the web address of any elk hunting forums ? Before i went on my trip out West a couple years ago i tried to find one but was never successful .

How much less?

Had you rather depend on skill and patience for placing that lighter bullet correctly?

Or had you rather just use a gun big enough to overcompensate for your mistakes?

It's all a matter of personal preference. I use a big gun too, for longer shots.

I wouldn't give you a hoot in he!! for poll from hunters.
