3 inches rain today

Hope everyone has been blessed across the country as we were today . Been a long time since we got this much in this short of time . Creek crossing was even going around the pipes , even though the 3 pipes were open and water was flowing !

It’s been a long time since we have gotten that much at one time. At least a year. We are 7” behind so far this year

We got about 2 tenths yesterday. I think in order to get three inches in the rain gage I would have to put it under the sprinkler.

Same way here and has been that way since the first of the year. We have probably had a record breaking number of rain showers and have had several times gotten an inch so far this year sometimes 2 or 3 inches overnight BUT !!!!

As far as accumulation we have to be WAY behind on total rain fall for the year. Most hay fields that has been cut so far around here is a good 40 % below average production because there’s not been enough rain to make the grass grow like it normally does.

Now it’s been one of the nicest and enjoyable climates we have had in years. Nice and cool almost like it is in early Spring with the exception of small
amounts of rain fall. But that’s not a factor if your not a farmer of some type that wants rain to make their crops grow.

I planted a vegetable garden this year for the first time in probably out of 7 years from the lasts time I planted one. Broke it up real good only plants growing it it was the ones I have planted. Took my garden tiller to the shop to get it going. A Troy built horse tiller. Had’nt been started in probably 6 years from the last time I used it. Guy I took it to got sick and couldn’t work on it. Has had it until Yesterday for about six weeks. I have been worried my garden was going to be grown up before I got my tiller back. But because of what little rain accumulated over the last 6 weeks I had very little grass and other type of weeds to come up in the garden and was able to run the middles out of the rows in my garden. Have been watering my tomatoes or else they wouldn’t be growing. I still have 60 acres that isn’t no where near big enough to cut for hay and normally by this time of the year I would be cutting it for a second cutting.

So yes it’s probably raining more frequently than compared to past years but it’s just pop up low volume rain showers. And get mild temperatures. Only good thing is it’s cutting down on the electric bill due to the air conditioning not running all of the time.

We got .4 in the gauge yesterday from the wed night/thurs morning... then rained again late Thursday and into Fri and got another .8.... Cloudy and foggy all day with a few light sprinkles. Similar weather pattern for the next several days.

I like that type of weather Jan. With our light sandy soil it helps to keep the moisture there for a bit.

We’ve certainly been blessed with nearly perfect rainfall this spring. Got my first cut of hay on May 12. 42 rolls on 8 acres. Then got a 3.5” rain on May 19; slow all day soaker, and it’s raining again now. Nice slow soaking rain.

I feel for y’all that need it. I’ve been there before, and complained about it here, but also compelled to give thanks here when times are good. Creeks are flowing, ponds are full and running over the spillway. Cows and calves are fat and happy.

It is too steep and lots of rock. Water doesn't soak in, it runs off. Last summer a thunder storm dropped a couple inches in a short time in the head of one of the side canyons. That put 4 to 5 feet of mud on the road where it hits the main canyon. Same storm had a lightning strike maybe 3 miles to the east. Two dozers, 5 pump truck, and around 20 people later we got the fire out. Only burned 56 acres. At that time B called a neighbor about a mile north of there. Neighbor asked how can there be a fire with all the rain we just had.

I don’t know that we’ve ever had 3” of rain in 24 hrs. Our country isn’t built to handle that much that fast. If we get 4” in a week we talk about that for years afterwards.

It’s interesting to hear about how things are different other places. We average 58” of rain annually, but that is average; it can vary greatly.

I remember some years getting less than 30”. In 2009 we got over 100” and thought we were going to turn into a tropical rain forest.

This year has been average so far, which is perfect for growing grass. I feel blessed and spoiled at the same time.

As for inches of rain in a short period, we can get a lot. It’s been a few years, but we had 12” of rain fall in just under 24 hours. We live on high ground, so no flooding issues, but I had some culvert pipes blow out and pond spillways to fix.

We could leave all these problems behind if we’d just be happy living in a high rise apartment building in a big city.

I much prefer the chaotic adventure that mother nature provides. I would lay money on the table and bet that the large majority of folks on this forum do too.

Life is too precious to be boring.

We were in a level 3 drought up
to a couple weeks ago . Didn’t change with that rain last week . Surely the drought monitor will change . More on the way .

We're barely in "normal" range according to the drought monitor; however, Mayhas been drier than usual. We're just under 3 inches for the month after this late afternoon's 1.3" pop up storm. We should be closer to 5 inches.

Another .7 inch from Friday/Sat showers. Grass is greening up wonderfully. But if you dig down, 6-8 inches the dirt is DRY.... Not complaining, trying to really appreciate that we have had nearly 2 inches in the past week... but we sure could use some more....

Week ago last before last Sunday I Emptied two separate rain gages at two separate pastures. At one location yesterday Sunday I dumped 11/4 inch out of the gage and the other one had nothing in it. There was rain forecasted for the whole week averaging 40 to 80 % through that week. Have just about an exact forecast with the exception of several days at 90 % chance of rain. I emptied both gages yesterday and I will be willing to bet I don’t get anymore this week than the last weeks forecast.

That’s pretty much how it’s been here all summer so far. There’s a lot of big hay fields that is usually going on or having had been cut a second cutting by this time. And because they aren’t being cut the first time. What weeds are in them is getting worse. It’s kind of amazing at how well weeds seem to keep growing and thriving regardless of how dray it gets.
