3/18 prices East Texas

Hard decision to keep the calves or sell. We've got a group been on feed for 110 days, do we sell or get the free gain from the fresh grass.

I know I'll get slammed for saying free but we don't run enough cows to eat all the early rye grass. So if nothings there to eat it we have to mow it.

We aren't having the green up we usually do and the cattle are still coming up for feed. Hoping we get some warmer nights soon.

I had planned to buy some calves around 350 pounds next month, let them walk around and eat grass, and sell them in December, like I did last year, but I'm not so sure that will be a good idea this year. I'm open to suggestions.

We are going to use this year to tighten the calving cycle. What cows haven't calved by May 1 the sitting on the trailer. Heavy Breds are going well in north Texas

I would definitely hold them and graze the spring flush. But Ive been burnt before as well lol.

Do you have enough calves to split the group selling half to capture these crazy prices and holding the rest to capitalize on the ryegrass to sell later???

We sold 11 heifers that weighed 602 avg today... $2.96..... and a group of 8 that weighed 706 that brought 2.57.... The smaller heifers I watched go through , in the 350-425 range were from 2.75 all the way to 4.16....
Overall the prices in TX you are seeing are higher on the smaller ones than here... about the same on ones over the 5-6 wts...

Going to go through and probably sell another group in a week or so... and understock the pastures this year.

Our reports won't even list those lighter weights. They will run 2,500 + calves and maybe have half a dozen under 400 lbs. Some 4 weights but the vast majority will be over 500. Those prices are pretty close to what we are getting here.
