Four out of 11 have calved so far...

First one.. Andromeda First Calf Heifer, Bull

Third- Holly, VERY small First timer... I was worried, but she had this 68 pound Bull Calf unassisted. Not bad for a $90, 105 pound weaned sale barn calf...

With out looking back, where are you located??
Looks like you have a mix of cattle breeds. What kind do you have? (Besides the obvious Long horns.)
 
I'm in North Central Washington. Normally we would still have snow right now but our winter has been quite mild this year.

I've quite a mix of cows...
Aurora- Purebred Scottish Higland, Her two Daughters, Aurora (LonghornXHighland) and Trinity (AngusXHighland). Trinity is very special, Born with three legs, and given me two perfectly normal bull calves.

Athena- Longhorn and Her Daughter Jessie (LonghornXAngus)

Patience (Black Baldy, Retired) and Her Daughter Jaimie (Blady X)

Kayla (LonghornXAngus Cross)

Elvira- Watusi (The cow with the 6' 2x4 on her head in the first photo) Had twins last year

Pow wow- Half Yak, 1/4 Longhorn, 1/4 Watusi- and her Daughter Frenchie (Heavy to the Longhorn)

Holly- Breed unknown... Probably at least a percentage Highland or Galloway.

Oohm- Angus- Another of our "Special" Cows. She has a crooked spine and twisted legs. Gets around just fine(and is a typical angus booger) she is due for her third calf this spring.

Wow, you do have a mixture! Now you have really peeked my interest. I need to see a picture of Trinity! A video of how she moves would be even better! :D

That is awesome! Do they do ok turned out, or do you keep them in?
Looks like your terrain can be a bit rocky and steep in areas.
Was Oohm an injury or a birth defect?
 
Both stay in with the retired cow. I usually turn them out with the other cows for a few weeks to get them bred. But the other horny broads get nasty sometimes.

Oohm was born that way.. Local farmer asked me if I wanted her. We had to sit her up for the first couple weeks because if she fell to her off side she couldn't get up. She eventually grew out of that (as she got rounder). Never intended to breed them in the first place but a bull calf sneaked into the pasture in the night and got them. After the first calves were normal and unassisted I decided to keep breeding them (ultimately easier than keeping a bull away from them). I somehow managed to miss Trinity's cycle this year so she is open. Not a huge issue for me.
 
Oohm's calf has quite the markings... either skunk or racing stripes

I see the sagebrush in the background.. looks like around here, minus big mountains
 
Oomhs picture is facing south but we do have quite the view of the Cascades to the east. The bull I used that year threw awesome colored calves. But he was a complete fence crawler which he capped of with climbing into my open topped feeders and sleeping in them. Not one other cow I have ever owned has crawled into my feeders. This year I am using a Hereford X Charolais bull. Liver colored with Hereford markings.
 
Both calves are marked really pretty! I bet it is difficult for either one of those girls to stand for a bull very well..........

Yep. Sometimes we will just wait for the bull to show interest and put them together for an hour or so and then pull the bull. Simpler and easier on everyone.

My memory aint so good, but I do not believe in this thread, until I asked........... :frowns:
 
Try not to. When we have to work the horned broads (Elvira and Powwow) we usually just do it with panels. The other horned girls (Athena, Aurora, Frenchie, Andromeda etc) all fit in my Chute with a little head jiggle.
