2013 Bull calves

Bull calves are starting to put on some pounds now that they are on the fall pasture...

Cold windy day so some of the cows were hanging around the corrals- so gave me a chance to get pictures of a few of the bull calves..



67T- a son of #16065897 Lazy Bar B Lady Blackbird sired by our Juan bull-- 16741353 Lazy Bar B Juanada Rito 06X... Should work well on heifers..



652- sired by Juan- and out of #15563792 - Galpin Lead On 652 ... She is about the biggest framed cow in the herd..



W- Juan sired out of #16311318- Lazy Bar B Leinie . Another bull that would work on heifers..


845U another Juan son out of a little Bannon of Wye daughter W C R Mary 845U #16175571.... Will make a heifer bull extraordinaire !

845U and 67T followed me around checking me out... 730 lbs and 720 lbs..

Weaned calves this week--- I filled in the weights on the calves pictured...The top actual average we have ever had...
Bull calves we kept as bulls averaged 685
Steers averaged 623
Heifers averaged 567 lbs...

Nope- no creep for anything... Now that they have been taken off the cows I have both the bull calves and heifers on grass/alfalfa hay- and hand feed about a lb of whatever grain I have available the cheapest- just to get them gentled down and used to being handled.... Already in just 4-5 days some coming a running when you yell for them- looking for that little bit grain..
For the first couple of weeks after weaning I also give them free choice to Smart Lic stress tubs :

As I have found these really cut down on sick ones and get them started eating faster....
Then in about a month they can go back out on grass if the snow balls aren't too deep- and eventually the heifers will be wintered right with the cows...

2 Questions. When were they born? And why 1 lbs of grain. If you are going to feed grain, why not feed what nutrients they need?

2 Questions. When were they born? And why 1 lbs of grain. If you are going to feed grain, why not feed what nutrients they need?

They were born between March 15th and April 15th... They seem to get the nutrients they need from the hay and pasture so can't see the reason of added cost/work... By next spring they may not be hog fat like some bulls- but in my opinion actually are in better working condition and can go out and do their job without melting away....
But I do like quiet bulls and cows- so like to get them used to being walked thru -- or else they would get only hay and grass....
