I find it amazing that our current calender ends every stinkin' year at the end of December and yet for some reason nobody ever flips about the world ending on New Years Eve.

You're too young to remember 1999 then...

The reason the world didn't end. The farm owner where I worked had a second house he rented out, the occupants invited the couple I worked for, their children and me to their 1999/2000 New Year's Eve Party. While one child brushed mosquitoes off the sleeping baby's legs the clock ticked over to midnight - and the rentee started jumping up and down on the outside porch.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Killing the millenium bugs."

We had the Y2K panic and geeks made a fortune off of it. Y3K is to far away. Maybe this 2012 thing can be a cash cow for someone.

This "mayan calendar" thing is just one more example of the disruptive effect of cutting govt spending. Clearly, to me, the calendar dept. got caught up in a round of budget cutting. "Hey, you guys got the calendar figured out for the next 4000 yrs. We have to shut you off. Tough times, y'know?" and "carving this stuff into stone ain't cheap, y'know"

it would all have a bit more relativity if the remnants of the myan civilization were not trying to sneak across our borders daily....

maybe they were not all that smart.

people on the teevee keep trying to tell me it was aliens who did all that stuff anyway.

didn't specify that they were illegial aliens or not.
