Could it be that the calf got in the way of a hormone driven bull? The calf could even be suckling when the bull tried to mount the cow and got hurt in the process.
Sounds like an injury of some sort with the muscles in spasm to protect the underlying structure. Have you tried an anti-inflammatory?
