Nikki (Border Collie) finally got her first heat at exactly 13 months of age Dec 10 . I have read so many different articles and none say the same thing . Can you tell me please how long will she be spotting for ?

For those who are wondering, no, we are not going to breed her , we would never be that irresponsible to pass those genetic defects onto someone else. She will be spayed after her heat is finished. Speaking to many oncologists they suggest one heat to help a female develop antibodies/resistance to prevent transitional cell carcinoma (bladder/urethra cancer) which is what we lost Steffie from. She had been spayed at 4 months of age .
 
No hard and fast rule. Some will leak for 2 weeks (our weanie dog dripped for a 3 weeks) others you have a hard time seeing any leakage at all.
 
Dun is right, at least according to my wife the "dog person". The average heat cycle will last 2 to 3 weeks, with the heavier spotting in the first two. Like Dun said, it will vary with individuals even of the same breed. Some may last a little longer, some not as long. Some spot heavy, some hardly at all.

Thanks Van, she is doing well .I have her back working with me a little ;she can move cattle all by herself, I just tend the gate. :shock:
 
Yup those doggie panties are great! You can also modify the kids "pull ups" to work at a little cheaper price. Seems like the larger the breed the longer they spot. My daughters setter went 3 weeks!
