Thinking of starting a small cattle ranch

Please build a good catch pen, and somewhat larger than needed for just 2 or 4 cows, because, if you are like most, you will get hooked and have to have more cows, then you will have to add on, or move the whole structure to a different spot to make it big enough for the cattle you end up with...

    Something new to share

I love it, I am looking forward to more being on the site. Great job. I'm sure I couldn't have done it that well, if at all. A good read, with pics is worth much to an old man who can't get out and about anymore. Thanks. tryinhard

    I don’t know why? (pics)

Yes very nice pics. And as stated the first pic, Self would have it blown up to a very nice {large}size and have it hanging in my living room. You can find pics like that but to have it on your wall and say for years this is my own, you will probably admire yourself. Great work...

    high tensile barbwire fence?

Never used high tensile, have used from the cheapest to some pretty expensive but has been Oaklahoma 4 barb for years now, and will never change. Good sharp barbs stretches tight, last a long time, trees break it, deer also, but my son is now doing it, and dosen't want to use anything different...

What to do with calves now?

You will need a friend or neighbor to help. Get them in headgate n one of you walk up sideways, {protecting from the kick to the crotch} grab tail, pull toward head, and whichever is cutting go for it. It would be something I wouldn't try by self at the size. n don't cut back on the meds, as...

This is a tree question, not cattle

There is a hybred pine that grows fast now, if spaced twelve to fifteen feet apart, they will limb up pretty well, you will need a few rows of them, and kinda staggered to be putting the second row and so on kind of between the first row, and plant maybe cedar trees or whatever in the place the...

    What should I buy first?

Do your soil tests get county agent out, to give you the thoughts, as to what to do but you will need a variety of grasses, different grasses do better in some places, more so than others. Bermuda, Dallas, clover, and many others. Be sure you have a variety. Fescue is a great grass to plant if...

    Poisonious Spiders

You are right Jogeephus, I have been bitten by the brown recluse, No pain, but you can stop the swelling and the rotting of flesh by shocking it with a chainsaw, or lawnmower sparkplug wire, I think I have told on here before. but it was no pain. tryinhard

    growing kids

I like the bull calves, and some of the cows too. It may all be leaving, it don't seem to pay to raise anything with extra ear today, but I love the good moma cows with the extra ear, not full blood Brahman, but I like the cross bred ones that can really raise a good calf. I have found a good...

I think they call this farming...

You probably need to have your head gate mounted, chained/ welded/bolted or something to some good cross ties, or pipes, or whatever, would be in the ground very well, probably concrete in the hole and the hole deep and wide at the bottom. You know a rope will usually do the job as far as...

    Enemy number 1

Gamo Air rifles will do the trick. They are quiet, they even offer one with a light mounted on a scope, plus the red dot type scope, They aren't too high either. I know they will kill it. I have an older Benjiman pellet rifle that only shoots 800 ft. per second, the Gamo Rifles shoot 1200 ft...

Anyone run Charolais bull for terminal cross?

I have used them on cows of all breeds and crosses. I do think they are the fastest growing calves you can come up with. I have also used the simental bulls they are right there with them as far as producing a fast growing calf, good calves. I do believe that one day, the Char. will be back on...

    calf in heat need advice

The vet my son uses, told him to wait 45 days before injecting lutalyse, but not any longer. it will not be a big thing, as far as size on the abortion. This was done in Feburary, and the calf didn't cycle again until June. Often the shot as was stated will make them cycle. I guess the wait was...

what to do about hay ground I fenced in for prego heifers.

If it were me, I would cut it. Actually if you don't cut it, you have more of a chance of eye problems. Were you going to wait til they were on it before you cut it? You will sure need the hay. tryinhard

    Mountain Cattle

Here is a link, whatever year it happened to us and a neighbor it was a drought, and had some timber cut also, and the cows were crazy for the white oak leaves. The Vet said it was worse then the acorn was about half green and half brown. here is a link I just looked...

    Setting on their hay

Yep, the hay prices will be up from now on, I don't even think that in a couple or three years if hay is and has been good, and there is surplus hay, it will fall back to what we used to pay for it. If n when there is surplus hay in many places you may buy some old hay, to sort of get it cleaned...

    How long??? (need answers fast)

Just buy a few bales to keep out of reach of the cows, and put one in as need be, no one on this board knows how much nor how much other etable stuff they may have access to. If you have too much hay, and it's hard to actually have too much, I'm sure you can resell it if need be. Good luck...
