Bringing the Cows Home - Video

Awesome video and great pics! Thanks so much for sharing. I wondered how you kept them following the truck but dropping a little feed makes alot of sense. My cattle got out of their pasture and into some soybean fields about a 1/2 mile away once. I took a feed bucket and the side by and side and...

    automatic waterers are now froze

I have quite a few Mirafount waterers and I've yet to have an issue with them freezing. Now granted our weather isn't nearly as cold as yours but I love the idea of the truck/tractor exhaust solution. How did you attach the hose the exhaust?

    Steel Rope for working pens

They use this type of cable under heavy tension at the local sale barn in the ring. There is a welded pipe frame and the cable is used between. It's super tight and I don't think there is anyway an animal can get though it.

    haul or wean

I've sold calves both ways and have had mixed results. I've sold calves right off their mamas that topped the sale and also held onto calves for 60 days that I lost on because I was inexperienced and they didn't gain weight. With that being said I'm in 100% agreement with BF. The industry as a...

Castration: knife cut or pull out?

Your speaking language I don't really understand but here is the best answer I can give. We pull everything out at once. We don't separate anything so I assume we're pulling it all out together. Keep in mind we only use this method on calves that are 400 lbs or less. Been doing it this way for...

Castration: knife cut or pull out?

We always try and cut our calves before they are 4 months old. We cut the sack and pull the testicle until it comes out. If there is anything left hanging we cut it off. Never had a problem. KW

    EN$

This EPD is the one that has been discussed in relation to the RB Tour of Duty bull. His had a very low $EN value but pretty much all the rest are through the roof. KW

    forage choice

I frost seeded some durana clover into some fescue pasture last year and have had great results! I'll be frost seeding it in all my pastures this winter. It takes well in my climate and grows really thick. My cattle have never looked better. KW

State bull test--what's the main point?

MidTNcattle, 95% of the people who raise calves in our area sell those calves at the sale barn correct? Once those calves leave that sale barn they go to a feed lot where they are fed large amounts of feed so that they can gain lots of weight and then processed for slaughter. Buying a bull that...

    Limit down

DMF and I have been discussing this topic for the past few days. I agree with Stocker Steve and Tim. Cash price is what we should all be looking at as well as what the sales reports in your local area are doing. We saw a drop in prices at the local barn on Monday but I think it has a lot more to...

    Cocked head

I have a heifer that has cocked her head her entire life. She should calf early next spring and is healthy as any cow you've ever seen. No idea why it's like that but it doesn't seem to affect her. KW

    How many insure their cattle?

I insure my cattle for lighting but in all likelihood it's more a peace of mind than anything. I do think that setting up some hidden game cameras close to your catch pen is a good idea. It would not keep them from being stolen but would give you some good evidence to locate the thieves. KW

    Which Squeeze Chute?

I've never seen a Stampede Steel in person nor do I know where to buy one but after watching their demo video I think I will seriously consider one when I decide to buy another. I really like how the head catch handle is in the rear of the chute. I have a Priefert now with the auto head gate and...

    Hay Guarantee for mold

I had customer baling operation for a few years where I sold a lot of small squares and I learned one thing. Most people who ask for things like that are more trouble than they are worth. If they can't identify decent hay when they come look at it (I always asked them to open a bale up before we...
