    Hay

I think location and how much work you want to put into it determines if there is value in it. I put up small squares of alfalfa. Cows get top and bottom bales from the stacks and the balance in first cutting. Its a pivot so we get 3 or 4 cuttings a year. If you live down south were this is...

Veterinarians and why you don't use them

I think one place vets are lacking is in reproduction. I have had a few vets in this state ask me what these meds were for that I wanted come AI time. I realize anyone can AI but here in colorado only vets can do embryo transfers from back in the day when they actually cut them open. There is...

Veterinarians and why you don't use them

I have one vet at my clinic that I request hes good at what he does. The rest I have no use for. They just got a new vet and she is the down fall of the clinic. She convinced them to bump the farm call charge to almost double and put a 10 mile radius on it and charge almost 4 bucks a mile on top...

Why prices are in hundredweight CWT

I think it is reported in hundred weight so no matter were you go you can quickly compair prices. 150 a hundred is the same as 1.50 a pound. All the sales I have gone to sell either by the pound or hundred except really small calves sell by the head(typically 300 pounds or less).

    Branding iron

If you live in a rural enough of an area the local welding shop might be able to build it to. My buddy that worked on the pipe line helped me build mine out of stainless. Did that so I can fire or freeze brand, just have to sand the char off for freeze. Also might want to consider 2 sets...

    Neighbor's cattle profits

I actually Think it has a lot to do with water being bought up for cities, water restrictions made tougher every year, and land price. As long as you get away from the metro area land can still be had for around 2000 an acre, but water rights are touch and go in a lot of places. They augmented...

    Neighbor's cattle profits

Were I think the big difference is in this thread is location, situation, and what people use for calculating profit. Some areas simple can't operate the same as others. Water table, rainfall, soil type, and growing season all effect how productive the land is and what can be done to lower...

    Stop the train

I always retain my own. Even if it costs more up front. When you factor in possible calving issues from buying heavy bred heifers and the chance of the original owner using questionable bw bulls or even high birthweight cows. A few dead calves or vet calls and this route would cost more. Next...

    Warts, two old time remedies.

I was told by my vet that it gets in the ground and the only way to get rid of it is steralize the ground. My breeding herd is clean but before we moved anything that came up to get ready to sell as show cattle got put in one front pen we had and whatever was in there got warts. Now that we...

    I received govt survey

I got one too. I don't think I will fill it out. If you look it has nothing to do with the USDA it actually said nass on it and aren't they the ones wanting us to do premisis registration. and livestock identification.

Is it possible to build your own headgates/squeeze?

I built one that is modeled after the ones we used at the AI school I went to. It is made out of well casing pipe. It will hold 2 cows at once. has sheetmetal covering the area around the head and a chain that lays on the ground and is pulled up once the cow is in to hold her. no squeeze, no...

    Border Coll. OR Aus. SHep

The best way is to spend some time with the pups as a group. This isn't a quick decision. watch them play and see how they act with you being a stranger. If they are running around wrestling with the other pups and quick to come up to you they are the more out going pups. Try to stay away from...

    Border Coll. OR Aus. SHep

It is my experience that they are both good. I have an aussie that has a litter of pups ready to go right now, but that might not be my first choice. I think the border collie aussie mix is the best. The whole key to it is find working dogs not show dogs. Most people that have working dogs has...

    Start-up's

Location has a big influence on whether or not to grow hay. Here in Colorado hay is bringing 100 to 120 a ton for big round or big square bales. Dairy quality is almost at 200 dollars. Small bales ar 5 to 6 dollars a bale. Now with those prices I cun put up the first cutting for my cattle...

looking for cattle tag that really work

I have tried everything from all flex to the ritchie engraveable to now the z tag. but what I do is partially engrave the z tag so even if the ink fades you still see the number that was on it. The z tags being one piece the only time I see one lost is if the ear rips out. I have a 10 year old...

CATTLE AT LARGE TICKET-COSTS MORE THAN THE COW

Here in colorado it is a free roam state. They have had cattle on the hi ways at stockshow and even little yellow jacket was running down the interstate in pueblo last year. This state is free roam you build fences to keep things out not in. My aunt hit a horse on the hi way and had to pay for...

    Feeding cows

Around here corn can be had for $3 a hundred from the farms. I can sell hay for $140 a ton to the grinder and buy the corn back for $60 a ton and gain better since it is a higher energy feed. Now if I can sell half my hay replace it with corn plus put half that money in the bank I'm making money...

    Calving....how many years?

Had an angus cow that had her last calf at 18. It wasn't structure or anything that got her it was the heat. A combination of the drought and the calf taking from her finally got her. I almost saved her but just to hot to get her to keep gaining like she needed to.
