    Slider or whole door?

I have a loading chute like this. Works great with a 20 ft alley. I also have a separate loadout i use with the full swing door for unloading or if loading a big bull since the turn is pretty sharp for a 2000 plus lb bull. I vote for the slider for loading. It is safe, your not in with the...

COVID-19, cattle prices, blah, blah, blah

Still going but numbers and prices are low. Only people selling now are scared. Cattle prices to me is like a roller coaster, you only get burned when you jump off, got to ride the wave. Im sitting on a load of steers i had planned to sell first week of April. May be holding them a while.

    Stockers on Grass

If you are looking into grazing stockers, i would suggest you read "Thoughts and Advice from an Old Cattleman" by Gordon Hazard. Not only has it helped with my grazing, but also the finances. It is a great book and has helped me with my program as well.

How many run cows for a living?

Grazing cows is not a full time job, you can easily tend to them in the evenings after work. Get you a good town job and put the money made in cattle back in to cattle. Each year you will see a profit and you can grow your operation. Then you can buy more cows and rent more land. One day you...

Tips for Starting a Seedstock Herd

Focus on quality and not quantity. A high quality animal will sell good in any area. Cull hard by fertility, docility, structure and performance. Not sure your budget, a good way to start is embryos. Study the animals you like and want to produce. Don't buy a set of cows simply because they...

    Starting a Ranch Selling calves

I would start off with buying some stockers and renting some land. See if you like it first, its not for everyone. :2cents:

    Older cows

I lease a good size farm last fall and haven't had anything on it until now. I have been buying all the old black/black baldie heavy bred cows I can find for $550-$650. Will sell the calves early fall and leave the cows on grass to sell late fall after they rebound from weaning. Don't see...

Does anybody make a living with cattle?

I have two neighbors that make a living with cattle. One runs around 800 momma cows, rents about half the land and owns the rest. The other has around 200 momma cows and runs 6-700 yearlings. They are both worth a lot of money, all of it came from cattle.
