    New Bull

What are the primary factors you use in deciding when it is time to cull the terminal bull and get a new one? Do you do it at a specific age or do you look for certain physical traits before making that decision?

Are you doing something also over at Ranchers.net? I have not been able to get on that message board for a day now?

Name your cows to be more profitable.

Naming had more to do with disposition ;-)

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

Exxon Mobil does just fine with their 8% profit margin! I am sure they are bragging ;-) Besides we are talking about the possibility of increasing your profits 8% not your total profit being 8%. I evaluate my business on how can I make more money not how happy I am with what I currently make...

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

That is not what you said in your original post, you said the operating loan not the cost of the operating loan. Don't rag on me because I can not read your mind! Say what you mean! Ps. 8% may not seem much to you being that you been raised on the Credit teet! But many companies survive on 8%...

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

You just proved my point then, if you can not reach a point in a business that you can not cover that small of a portion of your cost then you are operating on thin ice! I wonder how many farmers, ranchers, feed lot owners and other Ag businesses have went belly up over the years? And I wonder...

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

I am sure if you feed lot guys fail that get to deep into debt and can only exist due to borrowing operating expenses, there will be somone with some cash around to buy them cows everyone has. Just a shame that taxpayers have to bail out people that do not operate their businesses more securely...

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

Those are the kind of situations that business do use their credit for, but once they get that Temporary situation under control they pay that pay roll money back and go back to business using the Operating capital they have saved. I am not anti credit, just to many businesses today use credit...

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

It would not be petty cash. I have no idea how a feed lot works but I do know how all businesses SHOULD work. A business should be paying down the original debt from profits until one day you are operating with cash not always borrowing operating cost and spending profits. If a business has to...

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

Guess I do not understand how big bussiness operates. I borrowed money 22 years ago to start my small bussiness. I kept a surplus of cash to pay expenses and never relied on credit for any operating cost after the initial loan. I have borrowed for large purchases but not operating expenses. I...

Get READY for a "BIG TRAIN WRECK"??

Hopefully a lot of people will learn to keep some cash reserves and not operate with credit on those variable expenses. There is a lot of good to come out of this if we all learn from it!

    Starting older calf on bottle

Figured she may work with someone else. I probably let her get in to bad of condition before calving, this winter has had some pretty bad ice storms and she needed more supplement than I give. I been culling for easy keeping the last two years. My cows get no cubes, no sack feed and the last two...

Hardy breeds / crosses for winter

I would think many breeds may work for you, Herefords, Angus, Short Horn and especially Maine Anjou which have lots of hair. A cross of any of those should work in my opinion as well as others. We have only had problems with Horses and Mules with baby calves. Larger Calves have never been a...

    Starting older calf on bottle

I have a cow with a calf that is around 5 weeks old. The cow is just in terrible shape, the calf is draining her down terrible. I even put the cow in with a show calf and am feeding her good. I know the cow has to leave because she has a history of this. But what I am wondering is how hard...

How long you keep them bulls

How many years do you usually keep your herd bull, if inbreeding is not an issue? Say on a terminal bull. Average age before you replace him? Oldest bull you kept on the place?

    Genetics vs Phenotype

To add some light to what made me think about this. I am real pleased with my herd bull and I have a particular cow that I like everything about her, she had a bull calf a few weeks back and I started wondering if maybe her calf could be my future herd bull in two years to replace the current...
