    Stock tank floats

Thanks for the replies. I have a standpipe in the middle of a pond dug in 1972. Feeds two tanks through a iron pipe coming through the pond dam and running underground to the tanks. I took Dun's advise and built a cage out of old pieces of fence panel (lots of baling wire holds it down and...

    Stock tank floats

Nothin like a little common sense. I think the heat has gone to my brain. Does anyone else just keep doing the same thing and hoping for a different result, or is it just me?

    Stock tank floats

I have a pond that feeds two concrete stock tanks, controled by floats that rise with water level and shut off water coming out of 3/4 inch galvanized standpipe. Over the years I have had some trouble with ice pushing up and breaking stem that holds float. This summer the cattle have learned...

    Heifers What's your opinions

Nice heifers. Look a lot like the five I kept over this winter. Red Polls around the world are remarkably uniform in the way they look due to the lack of other blood being crossed in. Like your set-up but I'll take our green Kentucky hillsides.

    weaning heifers

Thanks for the quick reply. Have always kept the heifers sepatate all winter and fed them better hay and some grain (Just the way we did it and it did seem like they were putting on too much condition that was lost when put back out on grass) This board is great for getting ideas about other...

    weaning heifers

We are really short on water for cattle this winter. I have five heifers born in March I am keeping. Have delayed weaning while they were with cows out on stockpiled grass. Yesterday I separated them in a large tobacco barn but will have to haul them water. How long do they have to be...

    How you do it

I use to work them on foot and with dogs. The dog I have now is trained more to provide protection from coyotes and the cattle are so use to her they don't cooperate much and I've quit trying to get her to gather. Our hills are so steep horses have never been much help. Am using feed to lure...

    Foxtail hay for cattle?

I've fed a lot of foxtail hay (Giant Foxtail ), looks like Millet. Most fall hay here in our area will have some of it mixed in. Cows don't eat it much in the summer or fall but eat it pretty well in the winter as hay. The old saying here is "sure beats a snowball".

Please suggest some breeds for me

Once had a herd of Jerseys raised from baby cavles. Bred first time back to a Jersey but after that to a Charolais. Found Jerseys to be easy calvers, even to much larger bulls. Had much worse experiences with small type Angus cows. By the way the first cross Jersey X Charolais and their heifers...

    Dumb as Dirt

I have never claimed to be an expert but I have been aware of this term for well over 20 years. In the early 80's I worked at a local stockyards and used the opportunity to buy dairyXbeef open heifers that went through as singles and sold cheap. I would then breed them to either keep as cows or...

    in breeding

Most breeds of livestock were established with similar matings combined with severe culling. If the offspring has the qualities you are looking for without obvious problems you have an animal more likely to pass these good qualities on in a preditable manner.

    a Tribute

Crowderfarms, 250 years is a long time. My family has been in this area since 1775, they only stayed after 1779 permanent for it was too dangerous earlier. I agree with you about what's happening and do not blame the people, it just makes you sad to drive down the road and remember.

Crowder farms Thanks for the reply, I've never run over 20 head of cows( plus their calves and a bull) here for any length of time, just too hard on the ground. We are only about 30 miles south of a booming Lexington housing market but your high prices for land have not got here yet. It is not...

    a Tribute

I gave $280 an acre for it in partnership with an older gentleman, I was just a kid. The next year he let me buy him out at $300 an acre. Today it would bring $1000 an acre to farm, the level parts along the county road could easily bring $2500 to $3000 an acre in small tracts for houses. I...

    a Tribute

Thanks for your replies. I seldom feel qualified to give advise but really enjoy reading these posts. It seems these Cattle today boards have an unusual number of special and helpful people. In 1971 I was just out of high school and bought 80 acres and a herd of registered Angus cows. They were...

    a Tribute

A month ago I had some questions as our eight Red Poll 1st calf heifers were beginning to calve. Now we have seven on the ground despite cold winds chilling one and another getting stuck in a mud hole below a spring. One more is yet to have hers but looks close. This Sunday morning we heard...

    Chilled Calf

I meant drafty despite my effort to block the wind with stacked up square bales of hay. the wind can really blow on these ridge tops above Sugar Creek. The calf stood up and walked around for an hour or so before lying down and appeared to nurse the very proud mother. I hope the cold doesn't...

    Chilled Calf

Today it is 23 degrees, muddy and snowy, with a west wind gusting near 30 mph. One of the first calf heifers dropped a calf at daybreak. It was chilled and nearly stiff with a cold nose by the time I found it. The girls and I took it in the kitchen and brushed it with a wire dog brush, dried it...
