    Replacement females???

If my heifers had to fight off cougars, wolves, grizzlies they'd slip a few more pregnancies too. :-)

Some thoughts and questions about beef

Wagyu fat potentially is healthier than other beef breeds (or less unhealthy). This was the only scholarly article that I see that in (it's a few scrolls down under Fatty Acid composition): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5243954/ If you haven't tried FB Wagyu or Wagyu cross beef...

    Portable trough’s came today.

https://www.clearfabmanufacturing.ca/Buggies/ Interesting. Couldn't figure out what the metal "gate/bumper" was for. I get it now.

    Finishing A Wagyu

Listen to what Jeanne says. If you have a market for 28-36 month fed F1 wagyu that covers the additional year+ of feeding then feed away. But if this is just for freezer beef for friends and family -- F1 out of quality angus cattle can easily finish in 16-18 months at a very high quality...

Is it a Myth or Not

My father and myself have always bred heifers in the 14-15 month range -- calving at 2 years. That is a pretty common practice in this region. 900 lb cows on the other hand are not common practice. Having invested in scales a few years ago -- I can say that a 5-yo leather and bones Jersey...

    Farm raised beef

BJ Certified organic programs aren't allowed to use GMO feeds. So if you find someone advertising organic -- just make sure they are registered organic producers and you will be fine. Be careful with the term "grass fed" -- all of my cattle are "grass fed" but they are finished on a ration of...

    Introduction to Rotational Grazing

The ONE never fail rule of rotational grazing: Any rotational management plan will only be as good as what the weather/climate/rain in your area will support on an "annual" basis. What worked last year likely won't work exactly the same this year. Or more concisely: "if it don't rain the...

    Beginer advice

Listen to this and note their location. Cattle can acclimate to their environment -- but Brangus on Lake Superior ? -- I think you would be better off with several other crosses or breeds.

Cattle got through 4 rung barbed wire fence. Advice?

You are in MN -- which I'm guessing means you maybe got a fair amount of snow, ice and drifting this winter? If you did it's possible your "tight" wires were damaged and/or broken by winter wear. When you tighten things up to let out the cattle the new tension causes the fracture. I have some...

Cattle got through 4 rung barbed wire fence. Advice?

I grew up in SD where you were judged by the quality of your fences. I live in an area in MN now that has fewer cattle than SD, but still plenty, and the fences are mostly junk. Why? Because most ppl run a single hot electric wire inside the old junk fence. My vanity compels me to still...

    Buying bulls

What are they worth or what are they selling for? :-) Angus bulls are very much averaging all of 5K in a large chunk of the upper midwest/cattle country. Simmental may be slightly cheaper, but not much.

    Do red hides get discounted?

So 11 pages in -- my summary: Will red hides get discounted? In general YES In your specific market? Maybe, but probably YES In Canada? Not necessarily Is red a color or a mutation? Doesn't matter it will still get discounted Do black cattle taste better? Absolutely :)

Just found use for Corriente cows

Thanks Dave -- so likely supplying Snake River Farms brand wagyu. They were buying intact bulls? Interesting. In this region Imperial Beef leases their bulls to ranchers and then Imperial buys all the feeder cattle from the ranchers.

Just found use for Corriente cows

Which beef company is he selling those calves to? Are these his own embryos or is the beef company supplying them? I wish I had a larger herd and I'd do the same thing -- but I'm to small for a company like Imperial Waygu to bother with.

    Steak size

Is this the same butcher you've used in the past? Those appear to be boneless and they also appear to have been very trimmed (was the ribeye cap removed)?

Mat in the bottom of a chute or no?

I have a scale in my alley that is just metal diamond plate. We had a lot of sliding/slipping so I just put down a 1/8" rubber mat on top. It works really well. Interesting about the squeeze comments -- for years I worked cattle with my dad and we kept the chute narrow/feet area narrow and...

Best Freeze-Proof Water Trough for Central Texas

Up here in MN freezing waterers is just a price of raising cattle. As you mentioned -- if there is snow -- cattle will eat that. I have cows that are too lazy to walk the extra 100 feet to the waterer and will eat snow instead. Also as mentioned -- sometimes just allowing for the valve to...

Pastures and technology need advice or verification

I almost mentioned that the algorithms for this are complex -- haha -- or at least that is what I tell myself since I didn't do well in the course I was taking :) I know there are others on here that are smarter -- but changing my mineral regiment in order to augment my pasture nutrient level...

Pastures and technology need advice or verification

I will agree with LVR -- at the end of the day they are trying to sell you something. However, there are cameras and technology that can assess nutrient deficiencies from satellites. I don't know if those are available for drones. 25 years ago the term was remote sensing -- at the time it...
