Castrate My Bull or Leave Him In-Tact

Seller beware when posting on Craigslist.

What Age To Take To Sale Barn

Sell when you are maximizing your profit. Simple as that. Could be heavy, could be light. That's when it pays to start sitting through the sale you plan on taking them to and checking their market reports.

    Alternative livestock economics

You see a LOT more sheep and goats west of 35 than cattle since the drought. We have family members that made the switch and are doing very well. With premium commercial bred hair ewes being around $200-250, you can easily pay for her with the first lamb crop if she has twins. If you have the...

    Pregnant, But When???

Lute does not have a 100% success rate, even if given early, so it's definitely possible that she could be bred from the first AI. I would definitely watch her close!

    Pregnant, But When???

Not all cows are going to have enough fluid to call them bred at 31 days. Once they are about 33 days, 95+% will be easily identifiable, and by 35 days it is nearly impossible to miss one if you get a good look at the whole tract. 31 days IMPO is too short to call one open definitively...

    Feeding heifers

I think if the heifers are out of good genetics and growthy, you might get close to 2#. You probably already know this but sulfur toxicity is something to watch for if you feed them pretty hard. We've used DDG on our heifers a few times but more as a supplement to keep them going up rather than...

    Banding tools

5 cc. I buy the 10 dose bottles...lot cheaper that way!

    Banding tools

Tri-band bander, by far. Banded hundreds and have never had a band break, up to 400 pounds or so. We give all of ours tetanus antitoxin when we put the band on, and have yet to have a case of tetanus, either. I think you can find one at valleyvet.com, among other places.

    Electric branding irons

Yep. We had been putting our holding brand on the left shoulder on our registered cattle. The way our chute is, we had to be really careful or they'd rub the hide off if they started jumping around. We went back to the hip on the last couple of groups and it's been a LOT better. If it ain't...

    New Farmer. Any advice?

I agree with Dave on switching them over from Precon once they are eating good and settled down. It's more of transition type feed...really high in fiber so it won't mess their stomachs up, good protein, but not much energy to speak of. Very good for weaning or getting them ready to transition...

    Electric branding irons

I second the generator. We did it that way for a few years, then said heck with it and had electricity run to our pens. Still need to tweak the breakers to run more than 2 at a time but it's been a lot better (and quieter!!!!).

    Electric branding irons

We have L&H irons. All of the numbers, the universal, and our ranch brand. If possible, I highly recommend getting a set of clippers and slicking the spot where you're going to brand them. Not always possible depending on how much power you have, but it takes a lot of the guesswork out of how...

Breeding "High end" Simmental blood lines and determining calf prices

"I didn't know if you can "gauge" an estimated value based off of the total cost invested in the calf's mother/father or not. Or if their is a way to determine a "ball park" price so to speak. Any help or information to find such answers is greatly appreciated." Short answer is no. Like others...

What are you doing to increase profit this fall?

We are having our hay cut on shares, keeping all of our weaned heifers, developing them by hand feeding DDG through the fall and winter instead of putting out a bulk feeder full of Purina in the spring, and AI'ing all of our better spring heifers that came up open next month. We are also going...

    Forage supplements

We put liquid out for our fall calving cows usually around the time we put bulls out, but it really depends on what kind of body condition they are in. Really, what helps us the most is matching our calving seasons to the grass, having short seasons, and weaning our spring calves early enough...

Do Black Cattle Bring a Premium?

We've been sitting through quite a few sales around here the last couple of months trying to get a good idea of what our calves are worth. I would say that muscle trumps color to some extent, but of the different colors black definitely sells the best. If you can make black #1's with 3/8 ear...

    Squeeze chute.

The Q-Catch is on my wish list, but we'll probably end up getting another Cattle King whenever ours bites the dust. One can dream, though...

New to Cattle - Getting Started

I have to respectfully disagree about beginners staying away from Brangus. If you can find a place that raises them right (ie. no cowboying and letting them see people a couple times a week!) they can be just as, or more, gentle and easy to handle as other breeds. Anybody that doubts me can...

    Hang on tight

Just glad we weren't one of the ones that bought in 2 years ago spending $3500-4000 on bred heifers. Yikes.
