    Working Yearlings

When cows pull out their knife on me, I send the dogs. If that doesn't remedy I introduce lack of oxygen by way of rope tied hard and fast to saddle horn. When all else fails it's crop in the ear for next round of cull shipping.

    Herefords cancer eye...when?

Classic early stages. If she isn't nursing a calf or heavy bred, I'd put her on the cull list.

    Your best tips & practices...

How to raise cattle 101. 1. Put grass in front of the cow. 2. Put a bull behind the cow. 3. The rest will only be as complicated as you want it to be.

    Herefords cancer eye...when?

Seen it dozens of times. 99% in bald face cattle. Saw 2 cases of it today in a bunch we marked and branded. 1 was about the nastiest I've ever seen. Smelled her coming when she was still in the back of the pens.

    Cow down /need ideas

She's over the hill. Cows get old and get down just like people and every other critter. If she gets up before she wears the hair off her rump, ship her. If not, X marks the spot like Burno said.

How much land do you have?

I'm just a puncher, but the outfit runs about 12,000 mommas in total. A lot of the ground is unimproved or reserved solely for the owner's quail hunting courses. It's quite a beautiful place. I can only imagine how it might have been 50 or more years ago before barbed wire, when the crackers...

How much land do you have?

Personally only 150. At the workplace over 50,000. Perhaps some of our members have much more than the max in your poll of 300.

Things to alway's have on hand

Oops. I forgot to mention coffee as a must have. The fellers and I quit relying on just our thermos with a lot of late nights nowadays. We brought a coffee maker and supplies to the pens. We've weaned 1000+- calves and preg checked 1300 cows in the last 2 weeks. I'm growing weary of the pens...

Things to alway's have on hand

All this advice without mention of a good pocketknife? Make that a SHARP pocketknife. I wouldn't know what to do without mine. I reckon I'd just sit out of balance in the saddle without it. Can't even leave the house in the AM without my stone in my back pocket.

    Detecting Cattle By GPS

Interesting concept, but why not just saddle your horses, tote your dogs and go on a cowhunt. Why take all the fun out of spread out cattle?

    What do you folks carry?

So the answer to my original question is "flexibility"?

    What do you folks carry?

If I have a choice I'm gonna shoot more often with shells that cost $4.00 a box and make a lot less noise. A box for the 300 WBY costs $60, and I wouldn't dare shoot something out of a tree when the bullet is 180 grains and flies around 3500 fps. And small guns force the user to utilize the...

    What do you folks carry?

I suppose I could throw the .300 in the truck, but that's just overkill.

    What do you folks carry?

17 HMR with a Luepold 4X. Stainless bull barrel with wood stock. Cost the boss a good bit I'm sure, but I don't like it. Very accurate but no knockdown. I've shot "nuisance birds" with it and sometimes they fly away. I'm sure they died later but I want to see the fall. 22MAG is a better choice...
