Bud Box vs Bud Flow Tub ?

I am not an expert on Bud Williams but it looks like that tub is the opposite of the Bud Box concept. I don't think Bud was a fan of direct pressure and crowding/squeeze.

Had a round with a bull today.

Chances are good this won't be the last time. I wouldn't risk there being a next time.

    Kicking myself…

One other thing that is different for me is that almost all of the animals born here will be around for at least 2 years. If they dont make the seedstock cut, they will be grass finished for direct sales along with the commercial calves. If I was only selling weaned calves at 200 days or so, I...

    Kicking myself…

A live calf nursing on day one without me being involved is good no matter what they weigh. I'm not planning on checking cows and heifers more than once per day and small calves help me sleep easy. Makes no sense to me when people complain their calves aren't big enough.

    Today's workshop

I agree on the 15 month old ready to breed. Just wasnt sure what age these replacement costs were based on. 20 months old and bred is a lot more valuable than an open yearling to me. I am working to offer a moderate sized, maternal animal that is designed to be a replacement but any time you...

What kind of replacement is this - open 15 month old? what would this number be today??

    Automated animal check in

I'm sure the technology exists to track when animals have come to feed or water with an RFID tag or similar. Are there any reasonable systems available that work? Counting heads feels more like guess work most days.

    Summer Boots

I'm looking for some boots to wear while working cows in high heat and humidity. Tall enough to not worry about snakes in waste high grass, lightweight and cool - no need for steel toes. Need some real support for concrete standing. Not sure how much I'm hoping for here - havent found anything...

    Steer Moving Slow

If you were feeding all grain and introduced significant forage, the gut will have to changeover the rumen biome to start digesting from what I understand. Add in fescue and maybe it's temporary and will adapt to the new feed.

    Starting A Program

Figure out how you will market the animals produced. Figure out what those customers want. Find a seedstock producer that has been selling to that kind of customer in your area. Decide if they have a plan and have a good reputation. If they are just using a bunch of AI bulls from big names that...

    840 Tags

Thanks for the responses. My original intent was to have an easy way to pull up their record page at the chute as well as the lower likelihood of a small tag getting lost. Most of the animals I have came from out of state so they were mostly there to begin with. I have found that my software...

    840 Tags

I don't really know how the 840 tag/database is supposed to work. Here are some questions that are probably dumb but I don't know the answer: If I buy animals from someone who has already registered the animals location (their premise ID), is someone supposed to update the location of that...

    Claw & Angle EPD

I completely agree about buying bulls from operations that dont make their animals work for it, but producers being intentionally deceptive might be a bit of an overreach. They might not get the number exactly right but I have not met a known seedstock producer yet that just makes it up. (I'm...

    crossbred bull question

The majority of benefits from heterosis will be shown in the cow's longevity and fertility. Growth sees a considerably smaller bump. You're thinking way too hard here and could probably do a lot better with a yearling bull with EPDs that make sense for what you are trying to change.

When can I justify owning a bull??

This is a good plan. :)

When can I justify owning a bull??

If you can rent the kind of bull you like, keep renting . I would rent all of my bulls for 2 months if I could find what I need close by. A 3-4 year old bull has very little resale value over burger price and if he comes up down or dead at any point, it will be a big financial loss. For cash...

    Hot Wire Training

As a follow up, it took all of about 45 minutes for the group of heifers to gain reasonable respect for the polybraid. I saw 3 shocks in that time and they must have told their friends. I've seen about 2 other shocks in the last 3 weeks - 1 was from pushing each other around. I run a 3 joule...

    Cattle Expansion Funding

USDA MicroLoans ($50k max) are much less demanding than other types of USDA equipment loans and the person you deal with at the FSA office has almost complete discretion on deciding if you can get the loan. They have a bit of paperwork to get done but my startup loan was deposited 9 business...
