What would you estimate the BCS of these two cows? Sorry about the picture quality.

Black leg....a doozer of a question

Somebody with AIDS do something mean to you Knersie? I think blackleg resistance could be bred into cattle, but it will never happen. The reason is that very large portions of the population would have to be exposed to get a very few survivors. Those survivors would likely have some genetic...

    Antibiotic Resistance in Humans

I agree with several points. First of all, way way too many antibiotics get prescribed for viruses. People have a runny nose for 2 days and go to the doctor. They're not satisfied until they get an antibiotic. Then they take it for 2 days and start to feel better so they stop. This treats...

    Calf Pics

That's an interesting setup Larry. Calves look really good. How often do you have to change the bedding? How old are they when you wean them?

    Teat obstruction

We had the vet out and he was unsuccessful.

    Teat obstruction

That's what I say. Not to mention we have a crop of yearlings and some calves on the ground out of this bull. Luckily, we have been using AI for the last two years so we should be able to get replacements from those cows. I was pretty proud of that purebred heifer. Sure is disappointing.

    Teat obstruction

The bull is a Murray Grey. One of the heifers is purebred. The other two are Murray Grey X Black Angus.

    Teat obstruction

They all ran on pasture together. We never noticed them nursing each other. Guess we'll be looking for a new herd sire.

    Teat obstruction

The local dairyman had mentioned something along those lines. We are just going to cull and have a couple of bottle calves. I figured it was likely genetic and related to one sire, but was just curious as I had never seen this before. Thought it was just bad luck last year, but seems more...

    Teat obstruction

We've had three heifers now that won't milk. One last year and 2 this year. All three calved and mothered up. Calves would nurse, but after about 48 hours seemed to be really going downhill. Brought cows into the chute and couldn't get milk from any of them. Actually the cow last year could...

    Plastic Bag Question

Had a calf sneak up and grab an AI glove once. Couldn't get her penned up before she swallowed it. Never had any problems.

Makeshift Antiseptic-Was This A Good Choice?

    They are all dead

I have three comments. First, again, I'm sorry about your friends loss Jogeephus. Second the link Dun provided is the event that first brought Temik to my mind. The investigators of that accident apparently decided the owner had accidentally mixed the poison in with the feed. Evidently, he...

    They are all dead

A guy here had a bunch die a couple of years ago. Someone had put timic in his feed mixer and I think he lost about half his herd in one morning. Bad break for your friend. Sorry to hear about it.

    Other Suggestions for Fly control.........

If you have a situation where cattle are watering out of one trough or using one mineral feeder, dust bags seem to be very effective.

    One eartag or Two?

Nothing is faster or easier for removing tags than the tag cutters. Also, the last time we worked our cows we changed all their ear tags (couldn't read them any more). To hold their heads still we simply slid a 4 inch post between their shoulders and the headgate at the first drop down panel...

    Cow died today

Vicky, Thanks for the response. Would those levels still be valid today? I can draw them and have them run at a local lab no problem.

    Cow died today

Thanks for the replies. Brock I'm going to try your dried molasses idea and see if we can get them eating enough. Anyone know about lab testing after the cow has died? Also, should I be sending lab tests on some of our cows from time to time to make sure we are feeding the right mineral?

    Cow died today

3 days after calving cow became very weak and couldn't stand. By the time the vet arrived (6 hours later) had already died. Vet felt this was likely grass tetany or milk fever and I think he may be right. We had an older cow get down about 2 weeks ago and he gave CPMK and she seems to be...
