    blackleg

With the initial program of two shots (4-6 weeks apart) then the vaccine is said to be protective about a week after the second shot.

    blackleg

I disagree with three yearly - if they are breeding cows then a booster every year prior to calving will increase the antibodies in milk and protect the calf until it is vaccinated. Any cattle beast over three years is probably for breeding so an annual booster is cheap insurance!

Fast death of a dairy cow

Thanks for that - I am aware that systemic bacterial, viral or fungal infection is a definite contraindication for dexamethasone - couldn't find any similar info on Predef...

    Sudden deaths in five cattle

looking at the variation of replies (any one of them could be right!) then I would say you need a vet to actually see the animals and the environment they are in before you will get an answer

    Sudden deaths in five cattle

Would nitrate poisoning be a possibility in this area at this time of the year?

    Mastitis

For lack of anything else to see is it is mastitis you could do a quick "home made" test... mix one part dish washing detergent and three parts water (mix don't shake!) then mix equal parts milk and this detergent mixture ( a couple of teaspoons of each will do). Swirl this together for about...

Fast death of a dairy cow

One of the indications for "Predef" is for acute toxic mastitis... here is a quote from the Pfizer drug info on it... "Overwhelming Infections with Severe Toxicity: In animals moribund from overwhelmingly severe infections for which specific antibacterial therapy is available (e.g., critical...

    Mastitis

Have you done a "rapid masitis test" on the milk from that quarter???"?

Fast death of a dairy cow

I don't think blackleg - she was treated two days previously for being unwell?? I've never seen blackleg that slow - it is usually SUDDEN death (two days is slow in my book!). Interested as to why she was treated with dexamethasone - this is a corticosteroid and is well known to suppress the...

    minimum colostrum?

It would be a gamble raising a calf that had no colostrum - a big gamble!!! Calves are totally reliant on the antibodies they get from the colostum to protect them from a huge range of cattle diseases they can pick up prior to getting vaccinated etc. The calfs gut is only able to absorb these...

    Eyelids fused??

If it is entropion (inturned eyelids) - then the ram has suddenly lost a lot of its value!!!

    Arthrogryposis?

I have seen something similar a few times - very random events! There are a number of possibilities - it can happen as a fluke of nature, be genetic, or be caused by a viral infection of the mother during pregnancy (specifically Akabane virus), and it has also been linked to poisons/feeds etc...

    Eyelids fused??

    can you post pictures?

    sudden dead heifer

I would not consider an animal that dies after 24 hours of appearing ill to be a "sudden" death. How many people see cattle sick with blackleg...not many - they are dead when you find them - that is sudden!

    whats the cause of this??

Not saying it is or isn't - but anthrax does that!
  16. C

New to Cattle and have problems.

another thing to think about is the oak trees you mention - are there acorns that the cattle are eating...they are poisonous to livestock!!!

    Vibrio

I would be interested to here from the vaccine companies how they can "guarantee" your calves will not be PI calves. If one of the cows in your herd is a PI (and some of them do survive and breed) then her calf will be a PI - regardless of whether the cow was vaccinated or not.

    male or female??

Bulls do have teats - that is normal. One testicle has probably been retained - how old is the calf? Depending on its age it may come down by itself...

    joint infection Update

The infection in the joint is the obvious one that you can see. I would also suspect that he has abscesses elsewhere - liver, lungs etc. When a calf gets navel ill the bacteria seed out around the body via the bloodstream - when they get to the joints it is obvious there is a problem there -...

    The answer is

It would be interesting to know if their colostrum intake had been sufficient. Navel ill is certainly an issue but many times it is also associated with poor colostrum/antibody intake soon after birth. There are millions of calves born each year that don't get their navels dipped and they are...
