    "Dirty" Needles?

Herd manager uses Nolvasan (chlorhexidine) and another "syringe and needle cleaner". With all the shots they give using a new one every time isn't much of an option.

pics of cow problems and other stuff -- for the newbies

A couple of possibilities, nothing solid. She was given oxytocin 3 times a day for milk letdown, but it could've also been a slight ration change.

Bred 2/1, aborted the night of 9/3. Excellent guess!

Aborted Holstein calf. I'll get the number of months she was pregnant tonight. If you don't want this pic on this thread tell me MM. :)

    Penn Procaine and horses

Me personally...followed directions per the bottle unless directed otherwise by a vet. In the case of MM, a horse died where she is currently working. She believed that the dose of Pen they were giving was basically inaffective.

Fast death of a dairy cow

I agree with you. But obviously since I'm an employee there myself I'm forced to do one of two things...deal with him the best I can or find employment elsewhere and hope for a better manager.:P

Fast death of a dairy cow

Cowvet... Just a random question, but how about using Pred-ef 2x instead of Dexamethasone? What would you recommend giving for systemic mastitis? I have to get permission from the herd manager, but could be cleared to give the likes of Tetradur or LA200 via IV or IM if I needed to. There have...

Fast death of a dairy cow

No clue about calving problems, but I suspected respiratory simply based on what the herd manager had given her prior. L/F teat had been stepped on, and treated with Hetacin-K. I suspected hot mastitis when I ran a Keto check on her. I couldn't get urine so I resorted to milk. It wasn't...

Fast death of a dairy cow

She was dying before she ever entered the parlor. That's all I know from my partner asking the herd manager. I've grown up around this business, it's all I know. However the sheer numbers are something to get used to. It's a constant education. Death is something I'm accustomed to, just not...

Fast death of a dairy cow

Should've stated the cow's milk did not go into the bulk milk. They're working on seperate facilities right now to house sick animals, but they won't be running until August. For now treated cows are ran through the main parlor and milked into a pail. I agree management is an issue there, and...

Fast death of a dairy cow

Fresh under 20 days, not sure how many DIM exactly. She walked into the parlor, was milked by my partner, than went down 3 times before exiting. Fast resps, 104 temp, ears cold. Begged her to get up :P and managed to get her into the sick pen. Tried contacting the herd manager with no...

    TB vaccine?

Thanks! I'll look at their necks tonight. Makes a little more sense now.

    TB vaccine?

Dairy herd I work with was evidently vaccinated for TB yesterday. I don't very often talk to the herd manager, and I was curious how this vaccine works, and how common it is? Never heard of it before last night.

Very sudden red nose on calf

Chapped is usually a pretty good indicator of fever.

    sick cow

What I've seen is leukosis, not leukemia. It progresses fast, starting with the cow chewing nonstop on anything they can find. In the one case I seen I couldn't get the infected animal to leave the freestall; she was working on the pipes and was totally distracted. Eventually the lymph nodes...

I've seen it used with good success on older heifer calves. I'm struggling to remember what drug it replaces, one that was lethal if injected into a human.

    Mastitis

Depends on the type how well the possibility is for cure. Some like strep can be easily kicked with IMM drugs like Pirsue, CefaLak, Amoximast, etc. Other cases like E. Coli can be fatal. Milk can vary from slightly flaky and no swelling to no milk, just clear fluid, the cow running an...

    Scours...

That's my thought...350 lbs. and scouring? Usually see scours at 7-14 days in dairy calves.
