    Ivermectin Alternatives

Same timing here in upstate NY. I read some types of lice can cause anemia if it gets bad enough; or they scratch and don't eat as much; or scratch to the point of infection. So we're treating this year. The Eprinex and applicator weren't cheap so if they don't help, I won't be happy.

    Ivermectin Alternatives

Do yours usually get ringworm? If so, I was wondering if you were seeing resistance there as well; maybe that would be more apparent than resistance re lice. We have never treated for lice until this winter. They got a good dose of Eprinex in late Nov. So far they look better but the next month...

Mine (well, my cows') seems to get worse with cold rainy weather?

    Off cow

Newbie-ish question: what is meant by "top dressing"--putting the crumbles on top of feed? If so, what if the herd is all grass-fed?

    Flies

It seems to be very weather-dependent. But even when dry, we didn't get anywhere near 2-3 wks with mineral oil. We usually saw flies back within a few days! They also didn't scatter immediately like they do with diesel. Haven't noticed a stain (other than on clothes, but we always use it with...

    Flies

Having tried both. we use diesel instead of mineral oil. Cheaper, lasts longer, works better. Downside: cows can smell it more and try to get away.

    STUPID STUPID CALVES

any chance the tree or position cut off his breathing some and he suffered some anoxia? looks a little dain-bramaged...hope not.

    Temperarily separating Cows n calves

In any mammal, milk is a finely-tuned "supply and demand" feedback loop. If it ain't in demand (via nursing baby), supply goes down, not up.

    I couldn't see the pics. :(

Ticks - Ticks and more Ticks

Yup, mix with diesel (per ratio on label) and spray on as you let them into a new pasture eg. (You can use min. oil instead of diesel but it's more money and doesn't stay on as long. I swear the diesel chases the flies off as much as the Prolate or whatever. Downside is that cows don't like the...

    Reading calf feces?

Sorry to hear that, snoop. :( I had to recently ask our vet for advice on this very question. We've been painstakingly moving our calving from summer to spring (which, as it turns out, is still actually winter up here). So we had one with loose light yellowish stools (I called it mustard...

    Heifer Development

Good article and was timely for me. I have 3 nice yearling heifers that I want to breed in a couple months. I plan to separate them back out from the boss mamas and give them some extra groceries in the next week or so. They're a bit small yet and we have no grass in sight.

now they want to take away ALL OTC tetracycline. (LA200,etc)

Well, I guess I don't look at whether someone is a "hobby" farmer or a "non-hobby" farmer. I look at whether they know what they're talking about. I think I can learn things from people who have good animal husbandry knowledge. That often includes CT members who may be "between cattle" or...

now they want to take away ALL OTC tetracycline. (LA200,etc)

I like being able to buy oxytet at the farm store. (I have no desire to be able to buy antibiotic-laced feed there). Anyone who thinks farmers never use antibiotics irresponsibly has not read many cattle forums (CT included). One of the wisest things I've learned was actually from Dun's (may...

Horrible way to lose a cow

You raise a good point about the image that gets burned in your mind. A car in front of me hit a cat years ago and I can still remember it; it went into a spasm so hard that it (and/or the impact) launched it into a surreal contortion a story or two high, just above my windshield. Horrifying...

Horrible way to lose a cow

Yikes! Hadn't thought about that. How would you know you'd baled one, if it was just, say, a small rodent? Could easily get in even a small square bale I would think...We have about a million field mice and voles etc per acre.

Horrible way to lose a cow

Newbie haying question: I've read about the dangers of snakes (poisonous ones) in hay bales. If you get an animal baled up (birds, rodents, small fawn or such) and don't realize it, can it hurt the cows? Would assume it could spoil a bale but what if it's just a bird, mouse etc? Toxic? Would...

    Bull slipped on ice

My dog just did the same thing. She's doing better after a couple days (although it caused her to have a rare "accident" in the house. Hopefully you don't have that problem ;-) Hopefully some others will weigh in. I would bet: anti-inflammatory and pen him close to feed so he can rest a bit...

    Health question--humanoid

With our harsh long winters, we use a mix of rounds and squares. I took everyone's advice and wore a mask yesterday. Couldn't see squat but it seemed to help. Read up on farmer's lung and it scared the bejeebers outta me.
