    Where to Keep Tractor

I must have missed something... Zombies are my biggest concern. <haha>

Lightning Protection - High Tensile Electric Fence

OK, I understand and I greatly appreciate your help. I'll consider this as an option or even supplement. Thank you again.

Lightning Protection - High Tensile Electric Fence

Pictures are worth a thousand words... most of the time. Can you please elaborate on the setup?

Lightning Protection - High Tensile Electric Fence

I have high tensile electric fence on part of my property where sheep are kept. I am moving the charger inside because there's no sense in leaving an expensive charger out where it is up for grabs. I know others have similarly moved their chargers inside. Wondering about lightning protection...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Hehehe. Now just want to figure out WHO is buying new tractors and how this can actually be justified. My neighbor and folks here really made a strong case for the lack of any real need -- assuming I can get someone to come cut. Nobody will cut a couple acres, which put me in a rough position...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Thank you for this. So...taking everything into consideration, the bottom line is I'm not buying. Listened to an old farmer today across the road who also strongly advised against it. His input is to pull animals off the entire farm in March, pay someone to hay it all in June, and put animals...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Appreciate this. We're like minded on the independence thing and also on having the ability to help neighbors. Thank you.

    Where to Keep Tractor

I tend to agree...love the old/mechanical stuff...but anything I buy that's older would need to still have parts readily available and would also need to be fully restored, mechanically. So there's an added cost for that. I've wondered what such restoration work would cost.

    Where to Keep Tractor

3 to 35, now, up to 100 later. My current farm is not my forever farm.

    Where to Keep Tractor

Yes, that's where I'm coming to. As mentioned before, I'm not afraid of buying something nicer and hanging onto it for 30 years (yes, that is realistic). But yes, a premium tractor, for me right now, is overboard. That said, I'm leaning toward going with the less-capable Kioti RX7320 or used...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Thank you, and yes...always have to consider want vs need. I need winter stockpile for hay and why would I ever want to buy that when (if) I can hire someone to give me my own weed-free (or at least, MY weeds and nobody else's) hay? I also want to not have to rely on an unreliable hay guy...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Thanks, y'all. You have a good point with regard to buying hay and it is one I have considered and perhaps should reconsider. That said, I'm the only guy with tall grass, anywhere in my area. :-) All the "real farmers" have already put up their hay (round bales) and may get a second cutting...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Thank you, 50/50. I agree. In talking to the dealer today, 60 PTO might be able to get most things done. Then we're looking at other things such as ability to pull large fertilizer bins/spreaders and do some of that kind of heavier work. The cost difference is substantial between a 60hp vs...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Well, for starters, have you SEEN the cost of any sizable acreage with a home in good shape on it, the past several years? The previous owners of our property neglected the house, which we're now having to gut and rebuild due to moisture/crawlspace issues. So that's why I'm not willing to have...

    Where to Keep Tractor

Thought about that, as well. It seems as though $25k tractors in very good condition are tough to find in my area. Concern is that I'm new enough to this kind of equipment that I could buy a real problem tractor and end up spending substantially what I'd have spent for a new tractor with...

    Where to Keep Tractor

An old double-stall horse barn. :-) Tractor won't fit into there, but it is good for about 225-250 square bales, which is sufficient for winter stockpile for my current size flock of sheep.

    Where to Keep Tractor

I am a new farmer...and the past few years I've had someone else cut hay for me, which I keep for winter stockpile for a modest sheep operation I'm running. I am having an awful time getting someone to cut hay for me this year, and am considering just biting the bullet on a tractor and...

    Tractors...

Where are you located? That's quite a deal...at least not finding that here in part of MO unless the land is on a toxic dump and the house is falling in (ha! we're doing a full renovation for that very reason but initial purchase price was low!)

    Tractors...

Yes, this is correct. I want to grow, and plan to buy a tractor one time. Of note, I am well into middle age, fully disabled but one stubborn SOB, and am approaching farming/ranching as an opportunity to enjoy the years I have left, to learn, and to perhaps hand this off to one of my children...

    Tractors...

So why not go with a late 1980s or 1990s vintage Deere? I'm actually thinking maybe go with something before everything got too computerized.
