    Pocket Knife Poll

That Marines sword is pretty neat... My FIL has a dagger with a swastika on it. He got it from an uncle or his dad (his family died years ago). We assume he stole it from a nazi.

Would you use a classified section?

I would primarily browse equipment. Maybe buy a group of calves if they fit the bill.

    Plans for the year

My plans are similar to every year. Plan on making bank in the cattle biz ha! Told my wife this will actually be the year! Plan to grow the cattle numbers. Hopefully will make some convenience purchases - bigger cab tractor, bigger feed bin, stock trailer, maybe side by side.

    Tractors...

Hard to pay for much overhead off 35 acres. Everyone has to determine how comfortable they want their work to be. Although a tractor is an asset so the operations really just pays for maintenance and depreciation. OP said he was hoping for more land in the future. I think if someone wants to...

Wish I had 50 more just like them

@rocfarm they look better than when I first got them, but I still expect a $0.40+ discount when I sell them. I might show some numbers after I sell them.

Wish I had 50 more just like them

Here is one of two corriente crosses I bought at the sale barn last spring for probably normal price. They stuck out like a sore thumb when I got home, but I guess I didn't notice in the ring. Still learning. We'll see how they sell next month. This is about the closest I've gotten to one of them.

how is record numbers of beef export good for us with the state of the economy

This year will be easy money for anyone with grass. The packers are paying more for fats so supply demand is working some. It's probably not as efficient a market as it should be, but it's clearly working. The meat supply chain is different than the cattle supply chain, so I doubt meat and...

    Pond cleaning fiasco

@Ky hills what was the expected price? $24k seems pretty darn high. I thought pond cleaning was more like $5-10k. I am trying to figure out if we ought to clean out a pond now or wait another 10 years.

Timeless Fence for Sheep and Cattle?

I think Lee thought you meant this 7 acres of fence would take years to build. I assume you meant that it would take years to fix this fencing along with other fencing projects around the farm, as time and money allow.

DR must have stole that quote from Buffett.

    Stock Investments

@TexasRancher are you worried about the rising costs of the miners? I own KGC and FSM (not because they're the best, they just seemed like the buy at the time). Seemed like a home run a year ago. Costs have gone up quite a bit since then. Although AISC is still well under cost of gold. My plan...

    Stock Investments

BABA is a long term play. Might take a few years to pay off.

    What is the job worth?

I suppose the way to figure how much it should cost would be to take a standard custom grazing rate and subtract a standard lease rate. Around here that might be $1.25-$1.50 per day per cow minus $150 for the lease for a cow. Comes out to $22,500 for $1.25 or $36,000 for $1.50 per day...

    Hillbilly corner post

I was curious so I did some math. 5 wires would need about 3600 ft lbs of resistance from the rock. 4 ft diameter = 12,000 ft lbs 3 ft diameter = 5,000 ft lbs 2 ft diameter = 1,500 ft lbs

    Inflation and spending habits

If they change their way to measure inflation back to how they did in the 70s, current inflation is around 15%.

Cattle people/ farmers are getting old.

If it was easy to make money, everybody would do it. It's got to be a bit hard to keep the yahoos out.

Cattle people/ farmers are getting old.

I honestly think the cattle business is a great way to make money and a living, and I am excited about my future in it. Call me selfish, but I like the thought of having little competition. Few young people in the business make it sound like it should be easy to find opportunities in the future...

    Dow Jones breaks 30,000

I'm not sure where they get their data, but a lot of the stock market is owned by pension funds and 401Ks. Those big hedge funds manage a lot of pension funds for teachers and police officers.

    Age?

I'm 31. Dad used to run stockers, then switched to cow calf in the late 90s, so I was around that growing up. Wife and I bought a place in 2018 and we've run stockers on it since then. I probably wouldn't get cows until I could have at least 50 or so mixed with some stockers so that may be a...
