    80 days... shoot'em up

They are all registered but he doesn't do much with it. He needs some scales for a start  This is the sire of his favourite bull (Lindsay Starbright S117) and it has a good grass fed index (top 10% in 2009), the progeny are doing well as far as growth and structure go. He died in 2007 but...

    80 days... shoot'em up

Still all Murray Grey. Dad was talking about getting a Limousin bull to cover some of them but hasn't yet, I think he'll AI some first. And yes the market has been black here for a while. The market is terrible as well, a number of factors have conspired to cause a real slump in prices.

    80 days... shoot'em up

He's a very nice looking bull calf, good broad head on him and an excellent rump.

    Murray Greys

They do Keren. I like the Willalooka bloodlines and Monterey still have some of that. I think the frame sizes were around 6-7 for these ones. I can understand why they are going to bigger cattle to me it's going away from the strengths of the breed.

    Murray Greys

I agree with Keren, one of their biggest attributes is their temperament. I've seen them in the saleyards and their the calmest animals their. They were known as early maturing cattle that were ideal for vealers, but a lot of breeders have gone larger with them. Unfortunately they've lost a bit...

    Kiwi MG bull calf.

He's a really nice looking bull Waihou. I assume you own him but didn't breed him? I had a look at Gnoleda in the breed book and they have another bull with much higher ebv's than Zac, have you seen any other bulls by Gnoleda or used any semen from them?

    Kiwi MG bull calf.

He's very nice, a lot of length to him. Who's his sire?

    Free bull leasing !!

They look really good TF. Plenty of rump on that bull as well. I've never seen them before but they don't look too much different to straight MGs, just a bit hairier. It looks a lot like Armidale up there as well.

Have you got any photos of your Murray Grey/Highland crosses Townfarmer? I'd love to see what they look like.

    Lowline Bull

You probably need to shave him as well so we can see what he looks like :D . I've got no idea about lowline but he looks fine and I hope he does well for you.

    Am I improving my herd?

I'd be getting rid of Lily. Maybe you should look at buying some decent heifers or cows rather than worrying about the bull because he's only half the genetics. Buy a few good ones and keep the good progeny out of them and you'll probably get more improvement.

Bull for sale locally -- BA and Brahma

I'm no great judge but he doesn't look too bad for the price they're asking ($1800 ono). Hard to say without knowing his age and he doesn't look to have much brahman in him, but I've seen worse than him.

    red angus vs black angus

That's why I told him to get a Euro bull. MGs are Angus x Shorthorn originally but that was a long time ago so there would be a fair bit of genetic difference, but I agree that a Euro cross would be better. SS I don't think I've seen any Sim go through the saleyards here, I'm sure they do ok...

    red angus vs black angus

Red Bull Breeder I guess most crosses would be Brangus, but we don't need any Bos Indicus were we are. Novatech I agree that there is a real herd mentality but if that's what the market wants they can have it. My father has been telling me that he wants to get an Angus bull to put over some of...

    red angus vs black angus

Sure they would but the carcass wouldn't grade as high. Maybe it is just a perception that Angus perform better Novatech but they seem to bring more at saleyards. I'd personally rather do euro x british but if the saleyards are going to pay more for Angus crosses then I'm not going to argue with...

    red angus vs black angus

I found a study on it. It shows that lighter coloured animals perform better during heat stress but it's important to look at the final results table: Table 1. Carcass characteristics of Angus, Hereford and Murray Grey steers after 165-183 days on feed. Traits Angus...

    red angus vs black angus

Sure but everything I've read has said that angus are consistently at or near the top of feedlot trials for purebred animals. They're not my favourite breed but you can't argue that they've done a good job breeding and marketing to get were they are.

    red angus vs black angus

Completely off topic but the reason for darker and lighter skin in humans is more to do with vitamin D. With the weaker sun in northern latidudes we need more vitamin D which is increased by having lower levels of melanin, nearer the equator higher melanin protects against cancers. On topic...

I'd love to have a herd of these!

That Simmental looks like it would produce a great calf. I'd love to get a few of those. Maybe without the horns  . How do you think the breed has changed from those types? (I don't know anything about them).

    Breed to NOT use

I second the highland cattle. They may be a good breed but I went to a sale a couple of weeks ago and watched a few of them get the lowest price in the sale ($310). The trouble is feedlots don't want to buy them, there must be a market somewhere, probably direct to the slaughterhouse but they...
