    Brahma cross bull prospect

Give it a go. Learn in the job. Use the bull on a small joining or as a back up bull. I had a neighbour that ran a cross bred herd. Always kept a bull calf similar cross to the heifers to mop up after ai. Worked well for him. I have long wondered if you breed cattle on characteristic and not...

What bull to put on Santa Gertrudis x Hereford Cross Cows?

Hi. We ran Hereford x Santa cows and joined to an Angus bull. We got beautiful straight black calves. What a wonderfull cross. I always thought another good cross would of been a Charolais over the Santa x Hereford cows. We were not retaining daughters we just sold all the calves as beef. We...

    Nose ring weaning tips

Hi Gang. Just put a couple of Easy wean nose rings in calves. How long do I leave them in? Anyone used them? Looking for tips. Instructions suggested 3 weeks. First one I did I left it in another week. Then we had a few days rain. When I removed it I found it had pierced the nose like if you...

    Raising your own bulls

Re closed herd. We always kept our own heifers but bought in bulls. Always the best we could afford with the traits we like. How do you run a fully closed herd? Sounds interesting. How do you get the diversity? I take it you are starting with very good stock.

    Raising your own bulls

I have always wanted to try a cross bred bull that I have bred myself. What's the big deal? If you have the numbers try a few cows cut the head of them all if it's a flop. Back your self mate, give it ago!

    Red angus x Hereford bull

I have always wanted to keep a cross bred half Charolais half angus bull. Never had the courage. Apparently they make a good calf back over the angus cow. Sort of 1/ char calf so to speak little more growth for those that won't go full char bull. Why not try it.

    Baldy calves

Some Angus cows (black) can have a recessive red gene. Add any red breed you can get a red. I have seen this before. I love cattle breeding so many variables. I have a Hereford/ Angus cow mated to a black and white speckle Park. I got a red roan calf. I was a bit disappointed but she has grown...

help with what breed this bull is?

It costs the same to feed poorly bred cattle as well bred cattle. I wouldn't use a bull I don't know the breeding of. You may well put a Holstein Angus over your heifers and stuff up your heifers. One vet bill for a ceasarian will blow your budget. Maybe take some of the good advice given here...

    Heifer replaemnt requirements

    Breeding some crossbred happiness

That's a fair point. Most people do end up pulling in a pure bred to clean it up I think that's how angus became popular that black coat covers a lot lol. I guess my main idea is use the best animal I can lay my hands on the day but not bog down on breed. It should give me nice x bred cows that...

    Breeding some crossbred happiness

So I'm running a hand full of females. I started with black baldy cows. Joined them to Char bull sold them, kept the heifers and have now joined them to an Angus. Hire bull. I have also got one bb heifer ai to a Speckle Park. So I was thinking. As I am a little guy my bull will always be...

    Composite longhorn crossbreeds

I always find it funny when we take a less desired breed and "improve it" with a better breed . Sometimes I wonder if it's not diluting the better breed. Angus x Hereford = improving two good breeds. Angus x Jersey = a worse Angus mongrel.

    Bring Back The Old Colors

Here is a story for you then. I was about 15 the year my grandad passed away. I helped on the farm as a result and became a little more aware. My neighbour was a Hereford man in a Hereford area. He had his first crop of 20 Simmental Hereford cross Heifers calving to an Angus bull. They were...

    2way and 3waycross explained.

Well the above argument could go on for ever.........speaking of 3 way breeding. I have 2x Angus x Hereford cows with Heifers by the Charolais Bill at foot, about 6 months old. I am going to keep them as replacement cows. Anyone done that? Tell me all about it. What bull should I put over them...
