    Working cattle dog

We use Catahoulas. As recently as 6 years ago we didn't use dogs, but there was a lot of time wasted, and more people needed to do the simplest things. Most of our work is done out in the pasture, with a bit of work in some river bottoms and swampy land. I need dogs that circle hard, and have...

    Please say a prayer...

We have a litter of puppies and one has already had a go-round with parvo and beat it. We thought we might be out of the woods, but it looks like tonight we might have another that has a battle on her hands. Not the greatest Christmas gift, but I'm thankful we've had one beat it already, and...

    She's Huntin Heaven now

Very sorry to hear that. It sounds like she was really special, I hope you're able to remember her with joy eventually.

    Catahoula Leopard

We've got 6 Catahoulas, and a litter on the ground right now. Use them for penning cattle at our place, do a bit of catching for some neighbours when they need help. Coon hunt them this time of year, and take them south to hunt and bay-pen a little bit. They're a handful, but they've saved me...

    training a pup cattle dog

Gotcha, don't get in a hurry at that age. If she's not doing much by the time she 10+ months old I'd be worried, but at 12 weeks she's just getting her legs under her.

    training a pup cattle dog

How old is Snickers now? I don't know much about aussies (we have Catahoulas) but we've always let our puppies tell us when they're ready to go to work. Give him lots of exposure, keep taking him with you, and when she starts getting closer and starting to do something with the cattle, you'll...

    Dog food ratings

We used to feed Iams. It was junk, so we switched to Taste of the Wild. The results were fantastic, but the price tag was horrendous. We feed 6 dogs, and litters of puppies at various times. (By this time next year we will be feeding 9 or 10 dogs, price really matters!) After feeding TOTW...

    Bloodahoula

Haven't heard of that particular cross, but I know it's pretty common to cross a catahoula with a plott hound or even mix some bird-dog in. I was under the impression it was pretty tough to find bloodhounds that still hunted, but if they could be found I can see it working. Some fellas like a...

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope your wife heals up quickly.

    Very Good Cowdog Video

Gotcha. We can do slow and steady.... but it takes a bit of time to get stuff settled down to that point. Somedays it would be nice to have some good pen dogs for the close-in work.

    Very Good Cowdog Video

Weak? Do you mean weak-eyed? I've run cattle that aren't stopping unless something makes them stop. That something is 50 lbs of pure grit that grabs and holds. They can bark, slash, etc all they want and those cows won't stop. *I should have specified in my original post that my experience...

    Very Good Cowdog Video

Those are pretty good dogs. That white dog looked like a heck of a worker, but they didn't show him finishing anything. Those cattle must have been at least half dog-broke.... they were turning pretty good without much tooth being used.

    Working in the desert...

They will learn, and get more careful. But as dun said, if they need to go somewhere, if the dog is a good one he's gonna go there. We've pulled hawthorn thorns out of most of our dogs at different times. They do learn, but I'd never count on them not picking some up. I wouldn't even think...

working heading dog and barkers together?

It could work. We've never tried it, we have only heading dogs. If you have dog-broke or half-ways dog-broke cattle it could work really well if you put a good handle on your heading dog. Let the heelers drive cattle until they start to bust and run, then turn your heading dog loose and pull...

From the shelter to the ranch

I hope DH comes around. One like that doesn't come along just every day. He's a handsome fellow, and a good dog more than earns their kibble!

    help! what breed am i?

Could be almost anything, but I'm willing to bet there is lab in the mix. Outside of that it's pretty hard to tell; sorry I can't be more help.

New photos of Eli *+1 more new one*

He's growing like a weed! Sorry to hear about your dad's dog, it's always tough to let go of them when they've shared so much of your life.

    Fatty Tumors

I agree with Karen, they're a fact of life with older dogs. I am also quite cynical about magical supplements and pills that dissolve tumours while also feeding starving children in Africa. If they develop in areas that bother her, or she starts to really worry at them, the surgery is an...

    Shots for a puppy

What dun said. What kind of dog is it? The stuff the vet sells for heartworm, fleas and ticks will break you. Depending on the breed there are other options. Dunno about shots in your area, we do rabies and lepto for sure, can't remember what else we do.

    Catahoula Leopard

The other question is who is trying to give you a pup? And if it's any good why are they giving it away at 10 months? We work and breed catahoulas, and I'd never give one away at 10 months if I thought it had the stuff to be a good one. Ours can be loose in the yard when they're not working...
