    Beef cow/calf in confinement

Devil's advocate here- Just a thought from what I have seen in hoops that weren't full concrete. The deep bedded area was an epic disaster. The owner came back in after 2 or 3 turns and concreted the balance and it was much better. One operation, running fat cattle in it, so take it for what...

    still possible?

While getting there is a great goal, probably not a realistic place to start. I think 500 would be more reasonable, and that may be a bit much. Like everyone that comes on here asking for advice you either have been or will be told you need to find a good team-vet, someone to help with...

    Hiring a Nutritionist

Feeding 15 head you really can't take advantage of the byproducts the way that you want to. Wet distillers has a shelf life of 10-14 days during the summer in Iowa, no way you can make that work without having 90% spoilage. Some of the other byproducts are less bad, but you have to buy in such...

    Buying feeder bulls

There probably is money to be made if everything goes well. If they haven't been cut what else hasn't been done? Also be careful of the heifer mates.

FEED MIX FOR RAISING BREEDING STOCK

Not sure about the cotton seed with the bulls. I want to say that I heard from and old boy once that CS can really screw with semen quality on a bull, you guys from the south want to get in on this one? Additionally how much are you having to suplement the cows with grain? I'm not a...

Space required for steer - graining period preslaughter

Yeah I read that here recently in a magazine. I havent seen it as they go through about 3 tons of feed a week. They go through the feed, but what is the conversion and what is the ADG?

    skipping a feeding

On the cattle we fed for county fair we would skip a feeding every so often, usually sunday night. It seemed that by doing this their appitite stayed up and you got more total pounds of feed into them by feeding 13 times/week than 14. I wouldn't double feed either time as I think this may have...

Feeding for Over the Hook Competition

The last 60 days feed him some Vit E and sunflower seed oil. The Vit. E will give the meat a brighter, cherry red color and the ss oil will really whiten up the fat giving more contrast when the judges grade the loin. How big is he now, how big will he be when he's ready and how long do you...

    question about weaning

If you have a good place to wean them & If you have the labor to manage them right early weaning is a really good thing. 1)A cow and a calf seperate will eat about 15% less for the same gain as the pair together if I remember things right from nut. in school. This is because you're cutting...

    cost per day

I figure feed cost of gain at 10 times the price of one pound of corn for 1 pound of gain. So if Corn=$3.50/bu it would look like this $3.50 / 56#/bu x 10 = $0.625 in feed per pound of gain. This isn't an exact number, but here in the midwest where allmost all of the beef is corn fed it gets...

    Corn Fodder Rolls

Corn stalks are OK feed. If you've got dry cows that are say 2nd trimester and the temp outside isn't too bad they'll do ok on them. I think the protien is around 8%, but I'm shooting from the hip and nut. class was a few too many years ago, so if I'm way off base sorry. What many of my...

    Best Feed

Yes if you leave him out for a while he will have some compensatory(sp?) gain and will probably do better on the rate of gain. But if you bring him in and he can weigh 650 by Feb then he gains 2.8 until fair that puts him bumping 1200#. If you leave him out until then and he's only weighing...

    Best Feed

NEG=net energy for gain, usually measured in Megacalories An animal, any animal, has energy reqirements for basic functions-breathing, temp. regulation, ect. After that they put extra energy in to extras-milking to raise calf, rebreeding and growth, generally in that order. Your steer is...

    Best Feed

What weights does he need to be and when? Are you going to try and hit winter/spring shows with him or county fairs this summer? If memory serves IL weighs steers in in Feb/Mar, from then to State Fair it's 170 days+/-. They have to have a 2.3#/day rate of gain to show so you need to put on...

    feeding baled corn stalks

There can be a problem, but not always. Sending a test off to a lab is a lot cheaper than a dead cow(s). If it comes back good to go you can sleep better at night and it really didn't cost that much.

    how are these steers doing?

If they were mine I'd have them eating 3% of their body weight per day. That's what the good doctors at the university say and more importantly that's what the good feedlots around me do.

    retaining feeders

You know what, you're right. I went back to refigure it and it makes no sense and I have no idea how I figured that. However, I stand by my statements about cash flowing and everything else.

    retaining feeders

It's all relative to your cost of gain. If a 500# is worth $1.30 a pound he's worth $650. If we feed him for 90 days if we've got feed and sell him at 700# and he brings $1.15 a pound then he's worth $805. Can you put on a pound of gain on for $0.31 with feed, labor, drugs, death loss...

    Beef Butchering Question

Rule of thumb that I was always told is that a steer's dressed weight will be 63% of live weight. Could be as high as 66% or as low as 56%, but I'd guess low 60's and go from there.
