Genetic inheritance or super freakish coincidence?

Can you define before and after? The heifer I have prolapsed just as the calf was almost totally out of her. Long labor and a lot of pushing.

Genetic inheritance or super freakish coincidence?

I'm confused. (maybe my brain isn't firing 100% either :D ) Are you saying that your bull is the cause of the prolapses (genetics) or are you saying it is just fate/age (physical)? And I know you have previously said you have sold prolapsed cows, but is it because you feel they will do it...

Genetic inheritance or super freakish coincidence?

I was about to start a thread about prolapse and whether you can re-breed a saved momma who has healed and showing zero amount of distress, but I guess I can ask here. If a cow has prolapsed (obviously a partial, non fatal prolapse), just what are the odds of it happening again? And to say...

What's with all the calving issues this season?

Wow, that's a shame. What were the losses from if you don't mind?

What's with all the calving issues this season?

Don't count those buzzards out either. Was at a cattle meeting and a women spoke about buzzards taking one of her calves. Maybe the calf was weak, who knows, but the turkey vultures around here are huge and nasty. Anytime I see more than 2 or so flying over new calves and/or afterbirth, I will...

What's with all the calving issues this season?

Bez, with all due respect, you are wrong on so many points its not funny. At least in my case. I don't have neighbors, (closest is 1/3 mile away), I don't have issues with wild dogs, neighbors dogs, etc. I hear the coyotes chasing down prey almost every night. They absolutely run the treeline...

What's with all the calving issues this season?

Hopefully, the mommas presence is enough to keep the yotes at bay. I have a whole pack that runs the treeline not 75 yards from my calves. I'm going out at least 3 times a week when they start yelping too close Going to have to get a rabbit call and go out at dusk and just eradicate them.

What's with all the calving issues this season?

Looking at all the separate threads of folks having all kinds of issues with this season's calving and wondering what is going on? I had to pull 2 (lost 1 momma), other local folks I've talked with say this is the first time in years they have had to pull a calf (or 4), folks on the site are...

This Calving Season Just Plain Sux....

It may be stupid, but I didn't really give it any thought as the heifer is the same size as the mother. In this case, the heifer survived and the 5 calf mother died. No way to predict that. :frowns: But rest assured that I will no longer breed any somewhat small cows and I had previously told...

This Calving Season Just Plain Sux....

I understand about the chute, but this particular cow had a pretty rude disposition and would have tried to kick anyone near her if tied up. She was put in the head catch and her lower legs were somewhat blocked by a 2x4 so no one would be injured if she tried to kick, plus it would not allow...

This Calving Season Just Plain Sux....

I'm actually thinking that is the root cause of the 2 prolapsed cows. This was a 7 yr old Angus who was on the small size, and her daughter, who was also the same size (say 1000lbs or so). They both do/did have smaller hips than most, but obviously, the 7yr old has had plenty of others without...

This Calving Season Just Plain Sux....

Sorry, should have said before. Some cows are Angus, others are Hereford cross and 1 Simmental/Beefmaster cross. The bull is Angus/Beefmaster. Pretty much just commercial cows.

This Calving Season Just Plain Sux....

I only have a few pics that would show anything, and I don't know how to post them here. But basically, after seeing in past years what my cows have thrown, I would have to blame it on the bulls genes. My friend who has been around cows forever even commented that they looked like giraffes. The...

This Calving Season Just Plain Sux....

I'm down 2 cows as 1 died and there is no way I am breeding back a cow that has prolapsed, even if we did get it back in. Are you saying you breed back cows that have prolapsed? Also, are you saying you have no problem breeding for an 85lb calf? That's just ridiculous, who wants a big BW calf...

This Calving Season Just Plain Sux....

"Vent Mode On" Very small herd, started calving on 2/7 (1-11/2 weeks early). 1st calf (boy) was probably 75lbs and real leggy, then came a normal weight, but real leggy girl. She came out of a heifer and because of the long legs, the heifer prolapsed. She probably prolapsed 50-60% and we were...

Heifer Just Not Ready to Calve Yet?

No, not at all. (I didn't actually see her with tail out before, my wife told me) Matter of fact, I just went out to look and she was eating like normal, just as she was when I came inside about an hour ago.

Heifer Just Not Ready to Calve Yet?

Got a heifer that is going to calve very soon. Today, she was laying in the barn and kind of "grunting". She also went to her side. Then stood up, tail out. Nothing. She then went back to feeding, hanging out. She does not seem to be in any distress. Am I correct in guessing even though she...

    When Do Bulls Get Mean

I am rank (cranky) at 50, what will I be at 60? Hey you kids, get off my lawn.

From Drovers: Does AI cost or pay

That's what has me questioning the process. If I don't get results of at least say 80%, it is in no way worth it in my mind. I can run a bull year round and theoretically get 100% (100% this go around) and all I have to do is feed him. Another question I have would be, if a bull is used after...

From Drovers: Does AI cost or pay

I would have thought the success rate to be much higher than 60%. Heck, that is barely better than a 50/50 chance. Going to have to give this AI deal a lot more thought. Low success rate plus I am going to need a bull for 30 days, I may as well forget the AI and rent a bull for 60 days.
