Not sure if the calf was too big or that she fell while calving and could get up. When I found her she was laying on her stomach with her legs split apart and the calfs head sticking out. She was an angus cow and the bull a polled hereford. What do you all think happened?
Ok, I'm looking at this brangus bull for my angus heifers, the owner tells me that his herd bull has produced mid 70 lbs bulls and heifers in the 60 lbs range. Is that more or less what a low birth weight bull should produce?
I started my herd two years ago. I have angus heifers and ran them with a full size polled hereford bull. The 5 that have calved already had no problems. I bought another eight angus heifers and plan on using the same bull. They are producing some really nice baldies.
Ok thanks for all your comments. I'm in the learning stages of raising/breeding cattle and you guys have been very helpful. I guess I'll stick to my polled hereford bull for at least another year.
I have a polled hereford bull that I can use on them, but just wanted input on using a polled brahman bull. I live in south Texas and I've heard brangus do better than angus in hot/humid climates.
@Son of Butch, what kind of trouble will I have by breeding a brahman bull to angus heifers?
I have yearling black angus heifers and I'm thinking of using a grey brahman bull on them. Would that be OK for the first calf heifers? Don't want to have calving issues.
When is the best time for weaning calves and when is the best time for their vaccines? Also which vaccines are recommended/needed? I live in south Texas.
