    Twinning...

Had a set of dead twins last night, both were in normal calving position and trying to come through birth canal at the same time. Reached in and could feed 3 legs and 2 heads all just over elbow deep. Seems like bad luck, as she was so close to being able to push the one out. This is the 5th...

Is the winter of 2014 effecting your 2015 calving?

Had our first cow calve yesterday. 1 day early based on 283 gestation. 102 lb bull calf. We don't have many 100+ lb calves traditionally. Not sure how much blame can be put on the weather or not. Our heifers that calved last month averaged about 85lbs for calves using sires SAV Bismarck and...

    General opinions about temperatures?

Been calving heifers for 3 weeks now. Yesterday windchill was -23. They all calve in enclosed barn, stay there for 2 days then get kicked out into the yard where they have access to a calf shelter with some straw. This morning a couple 2 week old calves were outside the shelter jumping around...

    Sleep all-night calving ease....

It is a Gallagher scale with tru-test load bars and platform. It bolted to the alley of our portable tub/alley/chute in the background of the first photo. Two sliding gates keep animal in alley until weighed then off to the head gate. Love it come weaning and implant time for feeder cattle...

    Early Embryonic Death

Yes, I am hoping that is a possibility as well. They were palp'd 145 days after TAI date. Not sure how difficult it is for a vet to age calves from 100-145 days. It sure wouldn't hurt my feelings to see him have a couple wrong....

    Early Embryonic Death

Thanks all for the thoughts. Diet remained consistent as did choice mineral. Clean up bull went in on day 25. I'm not sure if they were cycling prior, but 20/30 showed estrus before/at time of tai, then gave the other 10 gnrh and ai'd them next morning and more than half had shown heat since...

    Early Embryonic Death

We time A.I.'d heifers for the first time this year and may have made a mistake. Following timed A.I., we re-patched heifers at about day 16-17 to catch any heats and got 5 in return estrus from days 17-22. (I initially thought this was great! 25/30 caught) When vet palped he only called 11 of...

    Replacement Heifer Too Big?

Yes we finish our our cattle that we do not keep as replacements. http://www.stockmenslivestock.com/custom.aspx?id=17 As you can see the market top for conventional cattle in our area at last weeks sale was $.50 off the drug free cattle and avg weight was 1539. That means there were some...

    Replacement Heifer Too Big?

Thanks for the responses, I know questions like this rarely have an answer. We really like our scale, but sometimes looking at the weights can be deceiving. We will likely see how she develops and make a final decision next spring....for the time being she didn't get an implant.

    Replacement Heifer Too Big?

Just weaned calves yesterday came up with dilemma. Biggest calf weaned was 728 (off momma and grass alone. 205 weight of 660 topping previous two years 205 wt high by almost 15 pounds. And.....it's a baldy heifer. Would you keep her? Cow is a 6.5-7 frame 1500lb cow that isn't overly easy...

    Keeping Ralgro implanted heifers?

We implant all calves with Ralgro in May/June before turnout. Replacements do not get second implant at weaning like rest of the herd. This may be a helpful link. http://igrow.org/livestock/beef/conside ... er-calves/

    False Heat?

Heifers 4-5 months bred. Palped 12 days ago confirmed bred. Now see bulls attempting to mount one heifer. Later walking with stiff tail. False heat? Aborted calf? Any guesses?

    Ultra sound

Thanks for the help, we will be talking with our vet on Sunday after church and hopefully he can get over here sometime soon. I think he said price difference goes from $3 to $5 per head, but that seems more than worth it.

    Ultra sound

Not to hi-jack the thread, but how long bred can ultrasound still be done on virgin heifers? Ours are at 110 days if they concieved on timed a.i. and I'm trying to talk dad into getting them ultrasounded vs palped. Not interested in sexing, just figuring which conceived A.I. so we can get them...

What do you use for Lute and GNRH? Single dose? Repeater?

    Synchronization mistake

*UPDATE* After botching the synchronization protocol last summer the results are in....We have calved 26 out of a possible 50 cows bred fixed time a.i. using Select Synch +CIDR TAI protocol This is what happened: Day 0-CIDR insert and shot of PG. Day 2-Realize gave wrong shot. Day 3- Give...

    Embryos?

I would probably use some of our commercial cows that have raised good calves in the past as recips, as opposed to buying sale barn cattle to use.

    Embryos?

I have been looking at finding a way to start adding a few purebred Simmental females into our commercial herd and have a percentage of our herd become registered. I know the breed does allow registering half bloods, and I may well do that as our Simmental a.i. calves start hitting the ground...
