    White on Angus

The whole point is that I don't care about white but if I wanted a paper to validate the calf I could get it. The whole premise that a paper makes a cow worth more is going to quickly evaporate with technology.

    White on Angus

First of all, they're all non-profit clubs. They aren't for profit and most of what they do is counter to making profit for the beef sector. Secondly, I could record my entire herd with ASA and get EPDs or with AAA and get ratios.

    White on Angus

They aren't registered as a simmental, but the simmental database will record them.

    White on Angus

I don't have registered cattle. As I understand it, they could be registered at ASA though. All those bulls would be in their database already and they'll take your money.

    White on Angus

Prophet put a lot of white on the bellies and some solid white udders in my herd. My Deer Valley All In cows have small bit of white on their udders. Two of my Prophet x QH Manning crosses have white switches and white bellies all the way.

    Cows calving in 10 months!!

I had some spring cows with my fall herd last year because there was extra grass there. Kept the bull in until mid September and had 5 jump to late Spring breeding on 14-20 days post calving.

    Calving in late summer

We top out in the lower 80's here due to elevation so I'd like all the Fall calves to arrive on August 15th if I could pick a date.

I have a calf that limpes on it's back lag it is swollen at the keen hoke and doesn't look to be swollen any where else

My vet has always advised "wait and see" when it comes to leg injuries like that. I'd give the calf time to figure it out. I had a heifer get hit by a car and ruined her front shoulder. It took her a while but she figured out how to use her leg as a cane and put back the weight she lost...

    Breeding

My first thought is don't waste your semen before you talk to someone that knows for sure. Semen costs more than shots usually.

    Wild All In Calves?

I used All In on all my cows for two years. The docility was what I expected with a 14 epd. Most were great calves. I would say 2 out of every 100 were wild. I just calved 35 All In heifers this Spring and didn't pull any. That wasn't the case with daughters of other calving ease bulls. I have a...

    Synchronizing Eztrus

The 7-day CIDR with time AI for cows and the 14 day CIDR for heifers work the best for us. You can find the exact times in the back of any semen catalog.

    Bull conception rates?

I think it's around 80% chance of conception each cycle.

How do I confirm AI calves vs natural calves?

I turn the bulls in 24 hours after AI'ing. The semen won't be viable after that so you've given it a shot at the AI bull. I used to wait 10 days or more but then I started thinking...what is the goal? The goal for me is to have calves to sell. It's nice to know who the sire is but I'd rather...

    Why AI?

I've started using the 14-day CIDR protocol. The pregnancy rates are much higher than the 7-day ones.
  15. V

    Why AI?

They rarely get confused about calves. It has happened but I've also had it happen when they are being born natural service as well. Sometimes a stupid cow is just a stupid cow. As to your point about being the same day, they really aren't. Heifers start calving about two weeks before their...

    Why AI?

There have been studies done that show a benefit just to synchronizing the cattle regardless of the AI. Timed AI can move your calving date up by 13 days across your herd. That means bigger calves, cows have longer to recover for rebreeding, and it can jump-start cows that haven't cycled yet...

    Blood-shot eyes on newborn

I would only add that I've had bloodshot eyes in calves. The "blood blister" is just a burst vessel. It is an indication that the birth was harder on the calf that you observed. I had a calf last year with bloodshot eyes but his forehead was also swollen. He was a hard pull out of a...
