    Early Heifer Maturity ?

I've a group of 8 -9 month old super baldie heifers who are cycling regularly now. It's playing be nice on my grazing rotation since i don't want them near any bulls yet. We're trying to hold off until they're 13-14 months to breed. It appears my cattle did better through the droughty summer...

    What percentage do y'all...

I haven't heard or even thought of an asphidity bag in a million years; made me giggle and think of my childhood in the Piney Woods.

    cant catch him..dangit

You, sir, are entitled to your opinion, as we all are. To set the record straight, I HAVE dealt with an "uncatchable" animal who learned to apply her Houdini like escape skills on a perimeter fence one too many times with a quick, clean shot. It was some mighty fine eating. I've been involved...

    cant catch him..dangit

...or you just shoot and field dress him. A total win/win situation - you don't have anymore aggrevation from him AND you have some meat in the freezer. If you go that route, just shoot him BEFORE you start running him.

    Granny through the years

I'm sorry to hear that CB. That's never an easy thing to do but it's very difficult when it's one that you ( and the kids/grandkids, especially) love. Take comfort in the fact that you were a good steward and did the right thing for her.

    Granny through the years

What did the vet have to say, if you don't mind me asking?

    calf mystery

No sign of the calf ever turned up and the cow is fine. As a matter of fact she's cycling.

    calf mystery

It appears we've had our first calf loss this year when we're down to the last 10% to calve. We had an 11 yo cow penned up with the other soon to be mommas in a small trap between the house and the barn. We see them coming and going everyday. Sometime in the last couple of days, she managed to...

    Injured bull

If possible, put him in a pasture/lot/trap where he doesn't have to travel as much for grazing and water for a couple of weeks. But only if you can keep him far away from the cows that need dates AND have a couple of bred cows to keep him company. That combined with Dun's Rx often works well.

    heifer drama - calving

Don't lay all the blame at the bull's feet - that "big brangus cross" heifer you love soooo much had a lot to do with it! :) All's well that ends well, though.

Bagging up... how soon to calve?

I use the T & T test. If the teats are swollen and sticking out at an angle and the tail is sticking out like a pump handle, you're fixing to get a baby.

    checking cattle

I put the heifers up in a trap by the barn then check them morning & evening - as I'm going to work and coming from work. The cows are checked in the evening. Both my husband & I work in town full time so we don't have the luxury of checking every 2 hours.

    Time to ship or not.

Check your local sale barns' prices; then decide when to sell her. Here pairs are higher than a cat's back - $910-$1440 on 8/6/07.

    The Neighbour's Bull

My money's on him jumping flat-footed . Very impressive to see a ton of meat clear a fence; also, very, very aggrevating if it's your bull doing the jumping. If he's learned he can jump, they may as well give him a one way ticket to town asap; he'll go where ever, whenever he wants from now on.

    126 lb. new born

A small, LIVE calf is always worth more than a huge, dead calf.

    Price of bull

$1800 asking price isn't bad considering that around here a bull sold across the scale brings 65-70 cents per pound.

    Drought effect on birth weights

Besides having mostly heifers the last two years (06 & 07), we haven't seen any changes from non-drought years. I was expecting a drop in birthweights due to the conditions - short grass or no grass, loss of condition while nursing previous calf, less than good hay, etc.- but not so. The only...

    need advice

As previously stated by others, time will resolve the issue. As long as the calf can suck a couple of teats now, just wait a week or so then it'll be banging on all 4 cylinders. Since udder characteristics are highly hereditable I would think long and hard about keeping heifers out that gal.

    heifers vs bulls

Bigbull338, this is the third calf crop I've had out of this bull; the first one was pretty much 50/50. My brother had the bull for three years before me with the usual 50/50 split. I hope the old boy holds up for several more years - he stays at home, is easy to handle and throws wonderful...
