1st Calf Heifers off and running!

6 of the 15 heifers I bought with March 1st due date calved last night and this morning. AI’ed to Quaker Hill Upper Cut. Two calved way early so only 7 more to go. Heifers are doing well so far. I’d expect a few more today and in the morning then will be only waiting for a few bull breed heifers...

1st Calf Heifers off and running!

AI’ed a group of home grown heifers due to start calving April 12th and “stole” some other partially AI’ed heifers due to start calving March 1st. Pretty happy how they are performing so far. Mothering up well which is good to see. 15 down another 18 to go.

    Two headed calf

I had a first calf heifer a few years ago with a two headed monster calf as well. They were conjoined right at the shoulder. The vet and I had a terrible time getting it out of her but we eventually did and saved the heifer in the process. I didn’t know how rare it was until the guy that works...

    Fall vs Spring

We Spring and Fall calve on our farm. My major complaint with Springs herds is lower conception rate than the Fall herds. We are always 97-100% on Fall herds and 85-92% on our Springs. Our black bulls don’t love that hot weather in the summers along with fescue pastures. We are going to start an...

    Heat stress and preg testing

We have lower conception rates with our two Spring herds than our two Fall herds. Like 80-85% compared to 95-100%. We have tried everything in the world to improve conception with the Spring herds but we (vets and local guys around me) keep coming back to heat stress on the bulls. Pretty hot and...

    Bulls fighting.

Exactly why we try to have an odd number of bulls with each herd. Either one or three depending on the size of the herd. While two are fighting one will be servicing!
