    It's here

Keep an eye on that bag, if it don't get sucked down on at least one quarter pretty soon, I would intervene. I had one born under adverse conditions one time that couldn't find the tit, so I bottled her. She sucked it down and went right to momma and started in on her, they're sometimes a...

    Twin question

The heifer twin is a freemartin, she will most likely be sterile.

Stop feeding grain prior to calving?

It comes down to selection. I've got cows (Herefords and Simm mostly) that stay fat on grass and air. If they were continuously grain fed, they would have a hard time waddling to the feed bunk. I'm sure Aaron has the same problem, quality Hereford's are notoriously easy keepers.

    Twin question

I'm glad to see there was a lot of good advice on this post. We know we can't save them all and many times we don't, no matter how much we try, so it's exciting when a guy does win a tough one. Your hard work appears to have paid off, congrats!

    Surprise!

Thanks all. This is my second set in the last two years, same bull different cows. I think I'm going to wean them at around four months if they make it, try to take the pressure off momma. As a side note, my dad had a shorthorn years ago that raised twins every year for about four years in a...

    Surprise!

We moved some cows to summer pasture last week from a winter lot. We put a bull at this lot to feed up a little to get ready to turn out again in a couple months, and decided to sort out a thinner cow to keep him company. I went down to feed yesterday morning, and the cow was slow getting up...

Calf is beginning a life of crime

I'll third that. I have an old Herf (coming soon to a burger joint near you) whose calf got just enough milk to get her eating grass and hay. Calf never got weak though, yours' milk must be practically nonexistent.

    Is this springing??

When they start getting a nice long string of mucus hanging down from their rear, start watching real close. This normally comes shortly (24-48 hrs) before they calve, however every one is different. As a general rule, you can't watch heifers too closely.

    The first sign of spring

I saved a nice heifer calf three nights ago by making an extra 1/2 mile trip. The cow has successfully raised seven calves, but doesn't seem interested in #8. It's been 50 and 60 degrees here, except for a few days, and you can guess when she decided to calve, the night it's 20 and wind...

    My first calf

It never gets old, finding a new calf. I hope the rest are just as smooth.

    He Was Not Born Equal

It's disheartening to do everything you can and that still not be enough. Even if we know they're a lost cause we give them every chance, do everything we can think of. The day we stop doing that is the day to find something else to do.

    Castrate or Not?

No doubt that's what he did. We even told him that was our plan. I'm not sure why he didn't want them run through the chute, I would have, to me that's value added.

    Castrate or Not?

The last time we sold, the local buyer told us to bring them in right off the cow, uncut and no vacs and he'd give us top dollar. We did, and I checked sale barn prices that week, and he was good for his word. As much as I like the idea of doing a vac program and preconditioning, I can't...
