Cows harvesting the last cutting of hay

Yeah it’s been dry here for the last month so I’ll be feeding hay after they are done with this. Barns are all full of hay so this seemed like the best option.

Cows harvesting the last cutting of hay

Decided to strip graze the hay fields instead of baling a late cutting this year. Much easier and cheaper on me and I really enjoy watching them.

    Clover seed spreader

My first soil sample called for 3 tons to the acres. I just had them spread 1 3/4-2 tons an acre 2 years ago so I know I need more lime. My PH was 5.4 on my first sample.

    Clover seed spreader

Honestly not sure. I put 26 ton on 18 acres 2 years ago. Haven’t resampled.

    Clover seed spreader

To be honest I thought of white clover only because there’s a lot of it naturally growing there already.

I plan to purchase inoculated seed.

    Clover seed spreader

I appreciate all the info. I was mainly going by the clover seeding recommendations from UK. I have been adding lime and plan to get another load this fall.

    Clover seed spreader

I was planning on sowing 4lbs of ladino 2lbs of crimson and 2lbs of annual lespedeza an acre. Plan to use clover and rotational grazing build the soil. I can’t justify $1,000/ton fertilizer

Does the Moultrie feed gate close down enough to regulate clover seed?

    Clover seed spreader

I’m looking to pick up a good seed spreader for my ATV. I’ve seen a lot of the cheap ones around and I don’t think they would meter clover seed very well. I have been debating buying a Herd Seeder but wasn’t sure if there was a better or cheaper option. I know the Herd is supposed to be good...

    woven wire and electric fence

I actually started putting the insulators on it for a middle strand. Never ended up running it because the cattle don’t bother the fence. I can promise you I would put it up if necessary. After all the money and work that fence was I don’t wanna do it again.

    woven wire and electric fence

I put one strand of electric on top of my woven wire. This is mainly to keep the cattle from trying to eat leaves and honeysuckle by reaching over the fence. Had a lot of fence destroyed from the reaching over to eat and pushing on it. After putting the hot wire above it they don’t wanna bother...

    Prussic warning

Before long Angus will have a EPD or $P for prussic acid tolerance

    Continue Baling or Change Course

I have weighed the option of buying hay for a couple years just due to the cost and hassle of keeping equipment going and trying to beat rain. What worries me is years like this one where nobody could afford to fertilize. Diesel fuel is outrageous along with baling twine. I think there’s going...

    Bluestem hay

If it is big bluestem or what’s called Indian grass here I’d buy all I could. That stuff grows from March till October here and will grow when it’s hot and dry.

    Help on baleage crops

I agree but it also gives me a lot of flexibility. I’m just a small timer with 20 cows at the most. I don’t think I could ever make a in-line wrapper pencil out

    Help on baleage crops

I was debating going with piper sudangrass or sorghum almum to try and get smaller stems. I don’t have pre cut knives on the baler so I would like to keep stems smaller.

    Help on baleage crops

I haven’t received a final quote in stone but I think around $4200-4400 I have family members living on the farm that can help me load bales so that’s no big deal
