So who else needs this rain to stop?

KT and A.J....it is hard to think that you guys are drying up....sorry to hear that. We are forecasted for a big rain here this Saturday...maybe 3 inches. You guys can't be more than 400 miles south of me? I am near 26525.

So who else needs this rain to stop?

It has been raining here in Southern Pa and Northern WVa for the last month. We only had a couple of 2 day breaks in the rain that we used to make some wrapped hay. I would like it to stop so I can get this hay all rolled up! How is everyone else getting along in the hayfields?

Made my first hay this year

I also wrap all my first cutting hay here in Pa. I have a NH 7060 silage special baler, and I can bale a few hours behind the discbine. I have a local Mennonite boy inline wrap all my hay...he charges $6 a bale...wrap included, and he feeds the wrapper so I can keep baling.

    Logging

Kyle, my advice would be for you to take bids. If it is a clear-cut for pasture, it will be a little easier for all the bidders to be on the same sheet of music. Here in PA, hard maple, walnut, soft maple and red and white oak are all on the rebound. Hard(sugar)maple is really HOT for shipment...

    Grazing on wheat questions.

What is the typical wheat grazing season, and also where is most of the grazing done? I was also curious what cattlemen pay per lb of gain to run on someone elses wheat? What is the usual weight they want for incoming calves? Thanks.

    Got Pasture

Inyati, What kind of weed is that ....the blue flower with your dog among them? They seem to grow along the highway up here. Whatever they are, cows wont touch them! Thanks...Jason. Nice pasture too!

how does a guy go about getting more grass

Watch those local obituaries. Sad but true. I buy standing timber, land, and sometimes cattle by watching the local papers. Most young people today would rather sell what grandpa worked hard for all his life, than to have his land or cattle cause them to break a sweat.

    Silage Bags vs. Wrapping

Atgreene.... all I can say is" hang in there", it has rained for 13 straight days here in PA . Looks like it is going to rain for another 5 days, if not more. I make a few hundred rolls of hay here in 2 or 3 crops. Took off to a good start on first cutting , got 250 rolls made, but then the...

Bale wrappers, tubes or single bale type??

I would like some input from all you hay makers as to what type and brand of wrappers you have had good luck with. I make about 500 4x5 bales each year on my home farm. I use this hay to winter dry brood cows and a batch of stockers. I am baleing with a NH 7060 silage special with net wrap, so I...

    Baler speed

Do any of you steep ground farmers have any tricks to keep the roundbales from rolling clear out of the field? Only thing that seems to work on the hills, is to jump out of the row i'm in and dump out at a level place or gulley.

    The fescues??

I mixed white clover (Kopo 2) and red clover (Dynamite) with fertilizer at the batch plant. I put this mix in a rented auger wagon ( like you would tend a big corn planter with) and then augered into a Baltic 3 point spreader because I can't get a buggy on my pastures to frost seed in late...

    The fescues??

Thank you all for all of the good info. I have been helping to fill the calfpool orders, and we have been trying extra-hard to send feeders out that will perform well; whether in a feedlot or turned out to pasture. Inyati..I really need to go to a forage field day sometime. Either Penn State...

    The fescues??

Our local calfpool got an order for lightweight calves headed to Missouri, but only from predominately fescue pastures. My question...Is orchard grass, perennial ryegrass, or timothy classified as fescue? Most of the local pastures are mostly og, ryegrass, and several other tall native grasses...

    Hillbilly Pasture

Inyati....When you said you cleared your farm, was it full scale woods- or grown up old fields. Also, what did your initial soil tests come in at(as far as PH). Thanks, just trying to learn, and great pictures!

    Current fertilizer prices??

Sky, that would have been a scary check to write! I thought maybe in the Old Dominian state that the govt. bought your fertilizer for you!

    Current fertilizer prices??

Any of you guys bought or priced any bulk fertilizer the last week or so? I pre-bought several tons of urea in late January for $520 a ton. Just wandering what the price and regional differences are this spring. Corn planting is just getting started here now.

Current prices on high-tensile fence installation

Any of you guys priced hi-tensile installation lately? I haven't had any built for 2 years and the quotes are coming in way higher than last time. For example... 6 strands, 3 hot, 16 foot post spacing, using southern yellow treated posts ...came in at $2.20 a foot; not counting extra charges for...

    fertilizing pasture

I got my soil tests back from Penn State... They are showing very low magnesium level. Fertilizer dealer says this can be corrected with high-mag lime application over time. Problem is my tests said ph's of 6.9 up to 7.3. Is there any other way to get the mag up through fertilizer since these ph...

    Spring planted oats

When my neighbor rotates from corn to hay, he uses forage oats as a cover crop. He makes wrapped round bales of haylage out of it .There is a window of high protein and awesome TDN he tries to hit.His cows sure eat it good.

    pasture disappearing? Dry lot?

Does anyone know if the ethanol business is still being subsidized at all?? When I see CRP ground I always wander if the govt. is paying some guys not to produce, while they pay someone else to ramp up corn production for ethanol. Seems like taking from one hand to give it to the other?
