    Feeding hay

This is an interesting thread about how it’s done differently. My grandfather used to feed the small square bales. He fed inside the barn. I never heard the terms flakes or fleets in reference to hay. I put out round bales in rings, or rolls as we call them.

What's a fair deal on neighbor haying my farm?

That’s how we do in the fall. I guess we’re too generous. We always have more than enough hay from the first cutting, so we just let our friend have the fall as long as he does all the work. He didn’t ask for that deal, we just offered it to him.

    Unrolling hay

I remember. My grandfather fed square bales. He put it in the hay rack, they cleaned it up, and they were done until next feeding. They didn’t have free choice all the time like with round bales.

    V rake piles up hay

Thanks for the information. Could someone please post some pics of the higher and middle capacity rakes with wheels in front of frame and frame above wheels. Thanks.

    V rake piles up hay

So, these rakes aren’t really designed for tall, thick hay?

    V rake piles up hay

I used a neighbor’s v rake today. I don’t own one, but I have used one before, and I’m considering buying one. The issue with his was that hay would often pile up on the rake. It was very annoying. It would be fine, and then in a split second, it would pile up. Is this usually something a low...

    Hay season problems?

South central one county from TN. We have had a few rain free days, however, the ground is so wet we will need several rain free days just to dry out the ground or we’re just mixing grass with mud. It’s also green enough now that it would have to lie several days to cure, so we just can’t seem...

    Hay season problems?

I still haven’t cut hay; too much rain here.

    Nice hay this year

I can see your point too since you need two cuttings. I always get all I need from the first cutting, so I guess the pressure isn’t on me to get it cut as soon as possible.

    Nice hay this year

I agree. I’ve actually done the majority of mowing in June due to our spring conditions, and my grandfather did as well. When June mowing is the norm, that’s what we consider “normal hay,” and we’ve always done fine. As you said, I’d rather have June hay a little mature than earlier hay that’s...

    Nice hay this year

I’m cautious and have never had rain on hay to amount to anything, but I’ve seen people who have, and it doesn’t seem good. I had a neighbor get his hay rained on the day he planned to bale. By the time he Was able to get it raked, half of it had just disappeared.

    Nice hay this year

Same here. We’ve been getting a shower every day lately. Today, for example, it was hot and sunny until around 2:00, then we get a downpour for about thirty minutes. Forecast shows no rain for a few days next week. Honestly, though, it’s not good weather to mow much sooner that this any year...

    Nice hay this year

Hay fields are looking good this year. It’s a nice mix of Orchard Grass, Fescue, Clover, and Timothy. I’m sure it’s a little mature for most people’s taste, but it’s been raining a lot. It looks like I’ll be able to get at it in about a week.

    Spraying question

I’d be ok if somebody accidentally sprayed my lawn with it. On the other hand, my brother usually fertilizes the hay fields, and he knows if he gets any on my lawn, he’s in trouble. :lol2:

    Pasture/Rain

How many cuttings do you usually get? Two is a norm here. I always get all I need for the year from my first cutting anyway.
