    Summer of 24 forecast

Talked to a LSU climate guy the other day and he said prepare for a repeat of 23’s summer. Last year’s Louisiana summer sucked big time for most. The only thing saving a lot of guys right now is the mild winter we’ve had so far. Had to dig an 8’ hole yesterday and it’s still pretty dry down deep...

    Buying Johnson grass seed

Good friend of mine was trying to date the neighbor's daughter and her dad wasn't going to have it. We got kinda plastered one night and decided to cut the heads off some Johnson grass and spread it in his cotton field next to his house. Well as it turns out they ended up getting married and to...

    How’s your grass?

You know it’s getting real when you see this. It’s in red river on the back side of our farm. The fire is on the other side of the river and went from 3 acre size to 300 in less than an hour. Dry, 20% humidity and windy.

    How’s your grass?

If I clip I will just take the heads off and I may put a small amount of urea on it, maybe it won’t burn it up. What do you think. Got 4 days of 50-60% of rain coming starting Sunday

    How’s your grass?

Here’s my question. Mostly Bahia grass hay field, it’s about 6” tall and been that way for over a month because of the drought. It has put on seed heads, got a 1/2” of rain a few days ago and the grass looks anemic and somewhat damaged. The question is do I clip the heads off then put some urea...

    How’s your grass?

I’m able to irrigate one 60 acre pasture, right now it is knee deep in grass. I’m thinking of bailing hay on about 20 acres of it. has anyone bailed hay on a pasture with cattle on it, can you think of any pitfalls. I’ll cut it kinda high and fertilize it then add some artificial rain. Plenty of...

    Winter feeding area design.

How thick is the aggregate on the fabric and do you have to clean the area of manure occasionally?

    Winter feeding area design.

Has anyone used the hay miser feeders.

    Winter feeding area design.

Yea the fabric plus aggregate for at least 30’ around the slab is a must and a 6” slab with chain wall to support heavy equipment. The farm next to mine uses this type setup and they raise 3-4K head a year and they really like the way it works. Their buildings are 50x300 and a trough runs the...

    Winter feeding area design.

i think concrete would be a more permanent solution in ease of cleaning and erosion from cattle using it almost all year long.

    Winter feeding area design.

I’m in Louisiana so feeding in winter is always muddy and messy and I would like to get a better system. I want to do this right the first time. My problems are 1 flat land with no sandy type hilltops to feed on. 2 pasture is open with only one large shade tree in the main section and a wooded...

    Smut grass control

LSU ag guy said that this grass thrives in sandy hard packed soil (my soil type) and breaking it up was the best way. A buddy of mine that is a chemical rep said if I sprayed it in optimal conditions that you only get 60-70% kill and it’s $25/acre. He also said that some people have used a wipe...

Any irrigation “experts” in the house?

Correct, not a problem priming. I just thought there should not be a vacuum at the high point with the pump running but as pointed out there is no restriction in the line (valve on the discharge end) that there would be a vacuum unless something created a large enough back pressure to put a...

Any irrigation “experts” in the house?

I think you may be correct. One problem I have is there isn’t a check valve in the system and that break is the only thing preventing siphon from the discharge to the reservoir. If that’s the case then a manual valve would work and I would just open it before stopping the pump. The motor has...

Any irrigation “experts” in the house?

This is how it works but mine just has about a 2” ball as the float

Any irrigation “experts” in the house?

All it is is a hollow plastic ball inside a cage. When water pushes the ball up it seals the opening when water pressure goes to zero or negative the ball falls down opening the port and allowing air to enter the pipe. Thanks

Any irrigation “experts” in the house?

That’s the problem, it never gets full. Water never comes out, it’s only a vacuum at that point in the line

Any irrigation “experts” in the house?

Brute, I have a question about my current setup. The setup I have now I pump up and over a levee that’s about 25’ from water level to top of levee and back down about 15’ for a total net head for the pump of about 10’. There is an air break at the top of the levee to prevent siphoning. The...

Any irrigation “experts” in the house?

I started thinking about something like that except inverted. I’m sure there is a name for it but what if I installed something like a dry hydrant with a large say 36” pipe and mounted the pump and motor in that. I could use my existing pump and motor and just get a column long enough for the...

    Continue Baling or Change Course

Just a couple of thoughts. What’s your age and how long are you wanting to continue cutting your own. If something happens to the custom cutters or the price becomes intolerable what will you do then. Can you consolidate your equipment like having a Kuhn style cutter, rake and bailer. Not sure...
