    Grazing Pastures with Johnson Grass

Nolan, Very sorry to hear about your loss, but I would like to know more of the circumstances. You are one of the few first hand accounts I have had of people losing animals to JG. I think it might help a lot of others on this board. In the pasture that the deaths occurred, was the grass...

    Grazing Pastures with Johnson Grass

Texasmark, I agree. I feel like the problems associated with JG are greatly overblown and a little common sense management goes a long way. For all of the stories I have heard about people losing cows to JG, I don't think I have ever talked to anyone first hand that lost animals to find out...

    Grazing Pastures with Johnson Grass

Valley, What month was that picture taken? I know it looks rough, but it still is probably still better than bermuda grass would be in the same conditions/time of year. My stockpiled bermuda quickly becomes a wet cardboard mat with the nutritional value as such.

    Grazing Pastures with Johnson Grass

A little off topic, but how does Johnson grass stockpile? I assume better than bermuda and bahia? Does it hold its nutritional value longer? I have been stockpiling and strip grazing bermuda/bahia for a few years now over the winter, but I have to supplement protein heavy to keep condition...

    Timely Rain

Vett, that is exactly what I'm finding around my pastures also. I was surprised that my cows wouldn't eat it as green and lush as it was a week ago. They eat most everything else. Maybe it is just new to them. I agree that it appears it might be beaked panicgrass. Thanks for the follow up.

    Timely Rain

Vett, really enjoyed your pictures with the timeline. You have a nice looking place. Its amazing how the droughts are burned into my memory but I will quickly forget how nice Aug this year was with the mild temps and plentiful rain. I will go back to dreading the months of July and Aug by...
