Winter Pasture - buy drill or custom hire?

Thanks for everyone's input. Found one guy that will do it custom for $30/ac. I provide the seed. I was looking to do about 130 ac. If I could find a used on for 6K then I could probably pay for it in two yrs figuring this custom rate. Wish I could find one to rent - I think I could pull it for...

Winter Pasture - buy drill or custom hire?

Well, the only hope I have to survive is to try to put in a significant winter pasture – early grazing with wheat and cereal rye, later with rye grass and clover. Hoping for a little moisture before it gets too cool to stockpile some pasture. Does anyone know of someone who custom hires to put...

glyphosate to control bahia in hay field

Thanks for the replys. I am familiar with Cimarron and have used it before. However the recommended application time to control bahia is in the spring, prior to seed head formation. I was just looking to get a head start on control. I did not want to use it this past spring because of the...

glyphosate to control bahia in hay field

Has anyone used glyphosate immediately after cutting bermuda hay pasture to try and control bahia? I've heard this works but it scares me a bit; afraid of destroying the entire hay field. Anyone have any actual results? Thanks!

    479 bales

Just finished baling 17 ac. of yucci clover and coastal that was heavily fertilized and about a month past when it should have been cut due to rain and availability of customer baler. 92 5X4 round bales; approx. 5.4 bales/ac. I was stunned.

    Overgrazed Pasture

Brad, A lot of folks around my area faced the same decision over the last couple of years. The ones that seem to fared the best were the people who reduced their stocking rate to match the conditions before everyone else was forced to. You may want to look at selling a few head. Good Luck.

    What to do

Contacted a custom baler in the area to cut, bale and buy the hay off of a similar described pasture (maybe a few less weeds). Baler will cut/bale for $18/roll and purchase for $2/roll. If that gives you some idea of the current market. But if the rains stop it will probably be worth more by the...

To Disk in applied fertilzer before or after rain

dcara, Not sure I completely understand your question. I am not aware of anyone around our area that disks in their fertilizer - this is a new one on me. What is the seed bed for?

    bermuda

Ever notice that whenever forage studies are conducted they always compare the latest and greatest to coastal? I have, that's why I chose coastal. It has proven itself for a lot of years. To me it was like choosing between a bull with unproven EPD acc. vs. a proven one.

Rye in trouble - need suggestions?

Must be a Texas thing. Same results here; little rain after sowing, no germination, and it's been a few weeks.

    Ahh Finally a rain

My place is halfway between Grand Saline and Canton - less than 2" since end of April - pastures are gone, stock tank dried up and the trees are dying. Starting to look like the picture JWNeely posted. If you're a glass half full person, last week I was able to dozer out the stock tank (there...

    Jiggs

I think I will try to sprig some Jiggs on some new pasture this fall/winter. I have typically sprigged coastal (using baled sprigs) in Feb. If you use top cuttings, do you have to plant it prior to it going dormant? Also, what do you use for a roller? Do you purchase one, or make your own? I'm...

Fall Lime to Prep for Frost Seeding Clover

SS, my ag ext agent is fond of saying, "If you can afford to only do one, lime or fert, always choose to lime." You may want to check with your local agent and see what they would recommend. Good Luck!

Winter pasture, permanent pasture, or both?

Thanks for the offer dun, but think I will pass. I have enough weeds to deal with. However, if you're offering to throw in a good saddle mule I may reconsider.

    Ridding bahia

I've heard spraying with roundup immediately after cutting the coastal pasture will knock out the bahia and not hurt the coastal. I've never been brave enough to try it myself. I have had some luck with Cimmaron (generic ally).

Winter pasture, permanent pasture, or both?

Great inputs from all, thanks! Really good points by Texan and J.T. since the ground is both sloped and bare, thus erosion is going to be an issue. Sounds like my best option is to prepare the ground as best I can for sprigging, but add enough winter cover to control the erosion. Thanks!

Winter pasture, permanent pasture, or both?

Thanks Folks! Three very different recommendations, just what I was hoping for. Keep'em coming ... Thanks!

Winter pasture, permanent pasture, or both?

Looking for recommendations on what to do with about 6 ac. I just cleared off. It was pretty much solid trees, so no real grass to speak of. I need to put in a permanent pastue at some point- plan to sprig with either coastal, jigs or tifton 85. Should I put it in winter pasture first - say...
