    What am I ???????

There is a very effective spray for foxtail barley called Kerb. It isn't cheap and it needs really cold ground to work and it is a suspended powder, but it does work.

    Cattle economics in Alberta

I already have some crop land that I rent out on a crop share deal. The renter is a relative and does a really good job. I pay one third of the crop inputs and get one third of the crop. He markets the whole thing as he sees fit and he also decides what to plant, inputs etc. I provide the grain...

    Cattle economics in Alberta

Steve: I don't think there are many areas in western Canada where cattle could be shipped. There isn't any area that could absorb the numbers that need to go. The drought really is just the last nail in the coffin. Cattle prices up here haven't been very good for about 6 years. The average age...

    Yellow toad flax ?????????????

hillsdown: The whole darned county is full of toadflax. If the number of plants are just a few pick it bag it and burn it. One thing about toadflax is it is a survivor. You can spray it out but it will be back if it goes to seed.

    Cattle economics in Alberta

In Alberta this year we had a pretty tough drought. Hay prices are pretty well in that 6 to 8 cent/lb. range. Due to poor pastures a lot of people are going to have to start feeding fairly early. With a lot of luck we can turn cattle out May 10...if we didn't eat the pastures down too hard the...

    Pasture Lease cost???

I am always amazed at how cheap grazing costs are in the southern states, or maybe I'm not understanding it or something? When you pay $10 an acre a year what is that land worth? How many acres does it take to feed a cow for a year? If the land owner is recieving $10 income on an acre of...

    What am I ???????

hillsdown: It is green foxtail, also known as wild millet. Pretty common in cereal crops in central Alberta. I wouldn't worry too much about it in a hay crop as it is an annual. It can be a real problem in a grain crop.

    Pasture Lease cost???

In Alberta you will pay $30 a month if you are lucky for a cow/calf. Big exotic cows are more.

    Round up ready canola....

Any broadleaf weed spray will kill it. Curtail is cheap, fairly mild, and effective.

Sorry Hay Costs More to Buy!

I agree pretty much with novatech. A dry beef cow can get by on lower quality hay(6% is maybe a bit low). I basically quit growing hay about ten years ago( I have about 15 acres that my sister owns) mainly because I could buy hay cheaper than growing it. I do have a decent baler(for baling...

    Killing Tansy?

Tansy needs to be sprayed before it flowers. Once you see the yellow buttons you might as well forget about it until later in the year. In late August Tansy seems to be susceptable to spray once again. Grazon or Tordon 22K work well before flowering and Remedy works well later in the year. Just...

Drought threat passed for another week

Very dry in large parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Also very cold. Crops are way behind or frozen. Hay is not growing at all and pastures are very poor. A lot of cattle starting to move to market. It looks like we will have another major reduction in the national cow herd. I suspect, if things...

    thistles

Lontrel works well. Curtail is a mixture of 24D and Lontrel. GrazeOn is an excellent thistle killer and leaves a residue in the ground for three years. Restore is a combination of 24D and aminopyralid and is probably one of the safest products around(it also has residual properties). If you can...

    cow/calf units per acre

dun: you are right about the time frame thing. Comparing a 5 month grazing season to a 10 month one certainly will make a difference. In central Alberta our grazing season can vary from 6 months to 8 months. Generally on a combination of rough native pasture and some older non fertilized tame...

    Spraying Question

Maybe you should upgrade to plastic? At $14 an acre you could probably upgrade for about that amount or less? You already have the tank saddle.

    Best Herbicide for fence rows?

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to achieve on your fence rows. If you are trying to kill off brush and broadleaf weeds then Remedy will work, but is pricey and has almost no residual value. Roundup is actually a bad choice as it will kill off the grass and eliminate the competition for...

    Harrowing pastures

Used to do the chain harrow thing on all the areas where we winter feed. Got lazy and quit. Let that area rest most of the year instead. The growth can be unreal. Grass thick and tall. I've often found being lazy can really benifit the bottom line!

    What Is Pasture Grass Worth?

Consider this: A yearling steer will put on about 2 lbs. gain a day on average decent pasture? Over 120 days he gains 240 lbs. If he went on grass at 700 lbs and cost $1/lb. he cost $700? He comes out at 940 lb. and sells for 90 cents or $846? So he made $146 or $36.50 month? If the pasture...

    feeding hay

I basically quit haying about 10 years ago. Quite frankly the cost of equipment, fuel, reseeding and fertilizer didn't make sense. I baled about 600 large round hay bales and 500 straw. The fact was my fields were getting too rough and less productive because the alphalfa was going. To rip up and...

    Controlling Winter weeds

Angus cowman: Yea, we get to pay a lot more for a lot of things in Canada! The last time I was in Great Falls Montana I stopped in at the Big Red Farm Supply store and could not believe the low prices on herbicides. We cannot import herbicides into Canada from the USA...at least as individuals...
