    Pick him apart..

Overall, he's really a nice calf. To be super picky, he's got more "arm" than "thigh", which isn't perfect, but he's soggy and looks mild and would make a nice bull for lots of herds. I'd be proud to have raised him!

My first cow -- questions on selection (m or f) and care?

Do it, it will be fun. You will find cattle have unappreciated "pet value". Pick your calf, based on temperament, steer or heifer. If it's an "orphan" perhaps it has had some handling, some taming, some positive interaction with humans other than chute work. The calves will be happier, will...

Get a better dog, that will be the end of it.

    need some expert advice

If those are the sort of cattle you want, then I'd buy them. If you are only going to own a few, why not buy some young ones, fool with them and get them used to your place and system.

    Remote Water Usage Reporting

We have a cheap pickup tank. It hauls 450 gallons of water. Take it out once a day. It waters 16 cows and 13 calves no problem.

    bull with pinkeye

    Great info-thanks!

    bull with pinkeye

"20/20 vision is a good vaccine for pinkeye" -- means what? I'm retired 10 yrs. I didn't think the vaccine was particularily effective, it seemed to reduce the # of cases in herds that had it bad, but it was not all that great in my experience. The aureomycin in the mineral comes today...

    bull with pinkeye

My hired man and I bought a bull together, a fancy club calf bull, BW suitable for heifers (we hope!) It's now time for the bull to come to my house. He has pinkeye. Hired man gave him LA 200, penicillin both eyes, fly dope, patched the eye with a loose patch to keep sun out. My herd has...

    Rain

Up here in south east Minnesota rain is not the problem, it NO SUN. The sun came out Easter morning, otherwise we have been stuck under a damp and miserable cloud deck since the beginning of March. I'm wondering if the earth tilted away from the sun from that earthquake in Japan. The cattle...

    Sagahatchee temperament

THank you very much for your reply. I am hoping that some others with experience my chime in. For myself, personally, if they don't like to see me coming, I am not interested in owning them: furthermore, I had some real negative temperament experiences with Lucy Boy calves and sold all my EXTs...

Totally New At This, Looking For Help Raising Cattle

There is no reason you can't have a couple of steers. They will not wreck your place, and with a single strand hot wire, they won't run off either. You need to get tame cattle, any kind will do, they just need to be tame. If you only want one, consider a little calf , keep it until...

    Sagahatchee temperament

My hired guy is considering spending big dough on a potential show animal for his little girl. The sire is AAA L. Sagahatchee, dam is a Champion Hill. I don't know anything about this sire except I saw one jump out of a sale ring once, but perhaps she'd been mishandled. Can you Forum folks...

    the###### WEATHER!!!!!

Got back to check "posts" and see misery loves company! Heard once on the radio that there really wasnt any down-side to "global warming" if you lived in Minnesota. WELL- the last few years it has been nothing but amazing storms with tons of precip, and the ice is just ridiculous. But everyday...

    Beef quality

Breed them to a calving ease angus with huge GeneStar numbers for tenderness and quality grade, and a sire known for "great disposition". The relaxed lazy ones taste best, IMO.

    the###### WEATHER!!!!!

So, we didn't plow the snow because some light rain was forecast, could have made it all icy, didn't want to create a skating rink out of the yard.....WELL, it's been POURING for 24 hours, now we have icy soup, cattle are a mess. YIKES! I hate a winter rain!!! But, despite all that, MERRY...

    Genetic defects/NH cows

I sold my AMC cows. I am doing what you suggested. These cows are something that I can handle and they raise fat calves. DNA is all great, but I wish they'd have DNA tests for other things too, like "she won't milk more then a cup a day" or or "her calves lap water like a dog and make a huge...

    making money

Well, thank you, that gives me something to show my husband and something to shoot for. We had been selling some bulls and heifers as breeding stock but then came NH as you may have seen on our posts above...

    making money

we live in SE Minnesota, and our farm is certified organic, though our cattle are not. we do have friends that shop at the organic store who could be convinced to buy quarters and halves. It costs about $400 to have a critter killed and frozen and packaged in a nice way (shrink wrapped clear...

    making money

How much (if any) money is it possible to produce with home grown hay (pretty good hay), 6 mos of pretty lush grazing, selling beef direct to folks, Angus genetics w/ hi quality grade genes for tenderness, feed efficiency and all, if you fattened out 10-12 head per year and sold them? Sold them...

    Genetic defects/NH cows

Yes! Last year we butchered 2 baby bulls born in May -- we butchered them in March, and they were terrific, our clients loved them. Flavorful and tender, and they left before the heifers even started to come into heat in earnest. There was a little riding, but not bad at all. We thought to...
