Is this jersey cow close to calving?

Hard to say for sure, but she looks to be pretty heavy bred at this time. Not springing so much, much def bagging.

    87% conception so far

getting it done Jeanne! We are having pretty good luck this year too, whats better is our IVF conception rate. I'm pretty pleased at the moment.

    Catching late calvers up

I insert a Cidr at 45 days post calving on anything I want to move up. As long as there is good mineral and good grass I can typically move one 25-30 days each year.

What’s the best way to wean?!

I've tried fence line weaning because all the magazines say I should. I can honestly say it doesn't work for me. The calves bawl for forever. This year I penned the calves in my normal weaning pen and penned the cows out of sight in a nice pasture with shade and the calves hardly made a peep...

    IVF Embryos

Not on par, but not far off IMO. A lot depends on you and making sure you put them in the right cows, and the recips are in good shape. I put some in my best cows this year and have at a 66% success rate. These are non sexed. I think reverse sorted rates are a little lower. I plan on doing...

    Big udder

I would say that she just has a lot of milk, and a calf that young can't drain more than a quarter, if that. So she is a bit uncomfortable. Like another poster said, put her in the chute and check her tits and see if she is open in all of them.

    Great start to New Year

Those calves look nice Jeanne. When do your 20-20 calves come?

    Good start

looking good! I like mine to have some white on the face as well. Sometimes when I think I get it figured out mother nature gives me a solid black one.

    Pregnant cow showing heat?

Not true, had a cow last year that the bull mounted and hunched every 21 days. She calved like the rest of them. I'd for sure be palping her before any drugs are administered.

    Early breed cycle?

Sounds pretty normal to me. Had a cow I struggled to get bred previous years abort her calf about 45 days early, and about 1 week before the bull turn out. The bull bred her during the 2nd week of turnout. That would be 2 weeks after she aborted her calf. When we preg checked she was 90...

I will wait on this one...

I have some that are bluffing and I'm cautious around them. But I had a first calf heifer red angus last year that was not bluffing, and if it weren't for that gate between us she would have killed me. She hit that gate like she meant it, and was pretty high headed for a couple days. I gave...

    First time doing embryo question.

From the calving ease aspect, and not knowing how well they will mother and milk are reasons why I won't put eggs in heifers.

    Calves Growing

The Shell Shocked bull looks fancy! All the calves look dang good Ron.

    Herd Direction

Depends on the herd I suppose. Are your cattle fancy enough that your breds will sell for enough money to turn a profit? Is there enough demand for your cattle to sell all the heifers? My experience is this, I find that a lot of times bred heifers don't sell for enough money to really make much...

ET newbie here... looking for advise

Loose mineral. They will hammer it pretty hard for the first month or so of putting it out if they aren't on a good mineral program. But after that they level off and have periods where they consume more. I also have a salt block with the mineral.

    First Shell Shocked Calf

The ones I have had do grow well

ET newbie here... looking for advise

Personally I would not set up more cows than embryos, if you set up six, and all 6 come in heat, and you put 4 embryos in, what do you do with the other 2? Seems like a waste to me. Not like you can breed them at implant time. I always set up what I have available, and put in what I can...

    First Shell Shocked Calf

He is built like all mine. Pretty narrow frame and lanky to start with. That bull is about as surefire calving ease as they come!

    First Shell Shocked Calf

That's big for a shell shocked calf! None of mine have been over 70. Nice looking calf either way. My biggest complaint is that mine haven't been overly stout by weaning time. But they are generally pretty fancy.

Bull steadily after cows who were palpated bred

I had a cow in heat every 21 days like clock work, bull hunched her every time. She calved in May, a little late but perplexing to me none the less.
