    Bulls and Fences...

Completely agree...a companion is critical...no cow, bull or brood is content alone. After preg checks we always have one or two that bred late but we still hold onto. I typically leave one of those with the bull... Some have suggested leaving them with the cows...aren't you working with a...

    190 lb newborn

This came out of an Angus? Unbelievable. How did you use a tractor? Hopefully just something to attach a small winch to? I'm amazed she didn't have paralysis at the least... Get yourself a good calf puller (any vet can find one for you, $150 +/-)...the tractor method made me really wince...

    Too many nursing problems!!

Thanks for all the input...we have looked into Selenium issues in the past...nutritionally we're in good shape. Parts of WI are deficient, but not in our area. As mentioned by many and the main reason we've determined is the bad weather conditions. Now that the weather is FINALLY improving...

    Bottle babies

    Bottle babies

As you'll probably find out, a beef calf raised by hand versus by its mother ends up ypically quite stunted compares to those of similar age...at least thats what I found the few times I did it. True...better than dead...although your time is worth something too. Unless you can somehow get a...

    Too many nursing problems!!

Interesting points...I haven't been as vigilant over the past years as all seemed to start nursing early...possibly not as quickly as you mention, but typically in 12 hours or so, which was the timing my vet always drove home. I do know what its like to have a group of stressed calves...I had a...

    Too many nursing problems!!

Thanks...I'm hoping so myself! Herd health, condition, minerals couldn't be better...I've followed a pretty strict regime for a good 15 years now. I'm hoping its the weather as mentioned...some of these were born in cold rain a few days ago. They are now being snowed on as we speak. A pretty...

    Too many nursing problems!!

Hey folks...I'm new here...a smaller cow/calf Angus herd...about 40 head.We started calving 10 days ago.  Of the 12 born so far, I've had 4 that have just been a PAIN.  I lost the first one...I haven't run into this for years and didn't realize it hadn't nursed until 4 days had gone...
