    Show Question

Well, I know exactly what you are saying. Some people have a win at all costs attitude. We just got back from state fair, some had got caught pumping steers up, had a big meeting lawyers and all, held up the show for 2 hours. I think they finally "withdrew" from the show, should've been...

    Help with a steers' top

Well to add to being on my "soapbox" Melissa, you may not be a "kid" but it doesn't matter, grown up or kid if someone asks for help offer help and that's it. :tiphat:

    Help with a steers' top

I tend to agree kids get on this post to ask for help, maybe there are circumstances that landed them with the problem they have with their cattle, whether it be first timers, someone else buying the cattle, or not having help to pick out better cattle, who knows it's not anyones right to rag on...

    Steer's ankles are popping

Its been a long time since I've been on here, been busy, busy, busy, but I was checking out some posts and I was interested in this one. We've been showing steers for 4 years now and we've had one steer that popped in his hock, which he was post legged, as most steers are, but he did'nt do it...

    Sullivan’s Show Cattle Paste

whew it's been a long time but i'm finally back. we've been showing cattle for 7 years, and in all that time we had 1 heifer we could not do anything with after months she went to the pasture to be a cow. we did use show calm one time, on a first timer, didn't do a thing! After being hauled...

Commercial Cows as Show Calf Producers???

We run a mainly crossbred cow herd. Most of them were heifers my son showed as commercial heifers, and he did quite well. We put a Maine bull on them and are getting some real nice Mainetainier heifers that he is going to show also, so with the right bull a commercial cow can produce a good...

    Why all the fancy feed?

We feed a 12-4-12 feed, it contains corn, oats, cottonseed hulls, soybean oil, yeast, vit a,e,d, minerals, molasses and i think that's it. We had real good luck with this feed for steers and heifers, our bulls we have a different feed mixed. The last two steers we have shown have hung 936 and...

    Rinsing Calves During Winter

We go by the if you can see their breath we don't wet them down. We do a lot of brushing all winter long, but on nice days with upper 50 degree days we will rinse them down if we can get them blow dryed quick. We live is SW Arkansas and it isn't bitter cold but it can get rather nippy at...

    Arkansas State Fair

Whew!!!!! We just rolled in from Little Rock and the State Fair.... Jumped the calves out of the trailer, fed, watered, and here I sit ready to brag, (just a little bit).. In the open Maine Anjou show we won our class and was grand champion in our division with our 8 1/2 mo old bull. We placed...

How much grain for your show steer?

Here at our county fair our grand champion steer gets 1500.00, reserve 1250.00, 3rd 1000.00. The last two years, there have only been 2-3 steers in the county. My son has been grand the last two years, but won't be this year, our steer got crippled on us. The main thing with us showing steers...

We bought a show heifer tonight

Hey showmom of 2, I know what you're talking about. My son has showed Beefmaster, Angus, and have incorporated both into his commercial herd real well. As he has gotten older he has bought him some Maine cattle and he is really fond of them. He has a Maine bull he is showing this year and a...

    Chocolate & Goats-Lambs

Ok, for cowboyup216 we did not actually "drench" her she drank it out of her pan and if you didn't pour fast enough she would try to drink it out of the can. So, HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. But I do believe they do drench sheep and most don't have a problem with it, we only showed one year so we were no...

    bad back legs

Boy, is that a big Amen!!!!! It seems the really good ones always do. We had a really awesome maine bull we were going to show, they were dehorning him, putting in the last two stitches, and he fell over dead!!!!! There are not words to say how we felt. That was year before last. This year my...

    Chocolate & Goats-Lambs

People use ensure to give them "fill",to give them some nutrients, and such before the show, but to keep them from being swelled out from a bunch of feed. We only showed a lamb 1 year, so I am no expert, but that's why we did it..She loved the strawberry

    Hey! Update time!!!!!!

Whew, slow down you're making me tired, but congrats on all the winnings. Now to ringworm, we had a beefmaster bull calf one year that picked them up from a heifer my son had taken to a show, had them on his ears, neck knees, rump, I mean everywhere, and everything I put on them his mama licked...

    Calming calves?

OK, here goes the soapbox again...... Why would little kids show an animal that is so big they're worn out in no time. I think it's great for young ones to be involved but I don't know about actually showing until they're mature enough and strong enough to show that calf. Some judges take...

    Chocolate & Goats-Lambs

Chocolate shows up as a stimulant, because it has caffeine in it. If you are at a show that drug tests, you will test positive for a stimulant, thus getting in lots of hot water. In Arkansas you get banned for two years. (1st offense) That's not even worth it.... If you have a lamb or goat and...

    Show Tricks

You Are Totally RIGHT. It is sad that "win at all costs" attitude some have, but we're going to have to deal with that in everything we do but all we can do is try to do what's right and go on. Because like you said that is just one judge's opinion on that day
