    best way to bottle feed

Actually got the mom tied up twice (she's crazy) and the calf nursed - then had to turn her out. I am inclined to feed 3-4 times per day instead of just 2. I think this calf would eat constantly if I would let her :) Have good milk replacer and going to put out some calf manna.

    best way to bottle feed

I have another bottle calf - have had 2 in the past. The first one did okay, not great, but at least got him to the auction. Not so much luck with the 2nd one. Any "great" ideas about the best way to nurture a healthy bottle calf?

    ice in large holding tank

Just started to think about that one this weekend - we just thought that surely someone had designed one of these..........we can't be the only people that collect water in cold climates!

    ice in large holding tank

We have several 400 gallon plastic holding tanks for water that we put under all of our downspouts to collect water when it rains (or snow melts) as we are quite water-poor on our farm. This works great, except it has been so cold this winter, everything is frozen. We have been trying to find...

    cow on cow nursing

We've just never had her do this before - thought it was strange that she would be starting at 3 years old and only on one heifer.

    cow on cow nursing

We have a 3 year old cow nursing on a 1st year heifer - they have all been weaned for 2 months. We've never had this before - not sure what's going on. We thought that heifer should be dry by now. Finally got them separated. The cow is not trying to nurse on anyone else. They should all be...

    bottle calf not doing well

Bottle calf now 4 weeks old - sorry shape when we found her at about 1-1/2 days old. Pretty sure she never nursed. Have been feeding her 3 bottles a day for about a week now - eats well, but can't get her to take any supplement short of shoving it in her mouth and not really interested in hay...

    more bottle questions

I tried dribbling milk this morning and she would lick, but still not open her mouth. I'll keep trying. Nothing wrong with her suck reflex - once she takes the nipple, she never lets go! We have mom in the pen with her just in case of a miracle, and as soon as she is done with the bottle, she...

    more bottle questions

It's the darndest thing I've ever seen - she'll get up under her mom and butt at the udder, but never latches on and won't open her mouth. She is now 6 days old. Every time I feed her, I have to open her mouth. She'll lick the bottle and nudge at it, but will not open her mouth. Very...

    more bottle questions

4 day old calf we have in the pen bottle feeding. When we found her on Sunday, she was too weak to stand up and nurse - mom was still attentive (and very aggressive), calf just couldn't eat. Got her in a pen and have been bottle feeding her. She is up, looking better. Now have mom in pen with...

    bottle feeding

Had a new calf Saturday a.m. Found her too weak to stand on Sunday afternoon, brought her in and bottle fed her (which she was almost too weak to take, but we forced it). This morning eagerly took bottle and was standing up. Can we try to let her mom in with her? We believe she nursed at...

    afterbirth

I have never had this before - usually within 3 or 4 hours it's all over - really, a week? I would worry about infection.

    afterbirth

How long before I need to worry about a cow not "cleaning up." Gave birth (her 4th calf) yesterday afternoon- no problems. She has been up and eating, calf nursing, acting okay, but still not cleaned up - about 15 hours now.

    Young bull

We just purchased a 14 month old bull and put him out with 6 heifers - how long might it be before he gets acclimated?

    weaning bottle calf

We have our first bottle calf this year - he is now 7 weeks old. He is eating a little hay. Have offered him some manna - he doesn't really eat much of that. What is the best way to wean him?

    Bottle calf feeding

Have our first bottle calf this year. It seems to me that the standard 2 qts/2 times a day is a little generic. Our calves range in weight from 65 to 95 lbs. Logic would suggest that a 95 lb calf would require more to eat than a 65 lb calf. I have been feeding 2 qts in the morning and 2-1/2 qts...

    cow won't let calf nurse

Had 2 cows in the barn that gave birth the same night - no problems. One of the cows would not let her calf nurse. Got her tied up and she would let him nurse, but not unless she was tied up. Did this for a couple of days. When we cut her loose the last time, she about killed the calf so we...
