Who's got a nice (Northern) mixed crop idea?

Corn, grows at a soil temp 5 degrees colder than Sorghum, Sorghum Sudan. Single cut, like the oats. When the oats are ready for hay, I believe the corn wouldnt be unmanageable. And if you buy just whole feed corn... A shocking amount will germinate. Good value per investment. I would give...

My neighbor says my cows are too fat

I havent seen a fat cow or emaciated cow on this thread yet. If you can see backbone and short ribs due to lack of back fat. Then the owner might get concerned. They arent where I would like them, but look to have age. Short version: I can't hear Sarah McLachlan singing.

    American Reds ?

My neighbor bought a pot load of their Santa Cruz cattle. He must like them, I think they do a fine job. My only problem with them would be he can't get a bull to propagate them so every generation gets closer to red angus. He raises a few replacements but mostly runs them with nice charolais...

    Dry er 2021

I destocked 30% of my cows. Kept all my calves. Plan to turn the bull in on all the heifers and see what shakes out. If it gets super dry, i guess they will be feeders.

    Bought some semen today.

Simple answer, they can't be found, and if they are they are not at a reasonable price. And if they were found, they still wont be as adapted to the forage base as one raised here. Roughly speaking, if I bring in a group of cattle, 30% will be gone before the 2nd calf hits the ground. Another...

    Bought some semen today.

Interesting you know that, considering it was the bull without a name listed. I also bought Herdquitter, 1 of the red angus and the Diamond composite bull for a test. Have you used him, or just like him?

    Bought some semen today.

With my goals for the farm, I've been looking to bring the size of the cows down and make them easier fleshing, hoping that will improving fertility and longevity. Trying to get this herd to year round grazing and I believe these bulls may help. When visiting peoples farms that manage similar...

    What to do with grass?

If you are giving half away now, i'ld almost bet you could graze it twice early in the season and stockpile after Sept 1. Then strip graze and you'ld probably need around 1.25 of stockpile to make it through winter if you normally feed for 100-110 days for winter. Doing it this way you wouldn't...

    Man, Cattle, and Veld

Talked me into the book. Seems high at 40.00 but I have officially deemed it too hot for working on fence until Sept 1. I'll put it in line.

    How to maintain grass

You didnt ask, and I don't like to poke into your business, but I have a few minutes. If it's broomsedge. It's usually an indicator of 1st, Low PH, or 2nd, low Phosphorus. There were so many poultry houses around here years back, phosphorus is rarely the problem. It tends to become present here...

    Orchard grass and Endophyte ?

Ergot, Starts out looking orange, matures into a black mass resembling mouse poop. I've got it bad enough this year I can find it on fescue, orchard, annual ryegrass, and even a little of the johnson grass headed early enough to pick it up. They tell me it has the same effects on cattle as the...

Has anyone here read the book by Johann Zietsman? What did you think?

    Brassicas

Also. This time of year you might find bin run oats for 5.00 instead of 15.00 a bag at the Co-op. I see them on craigslist occasionally. Have no idea in your area, but an hour of looking and calling around might save some real money.

    Brassicas

I can't help much as i've never got a decent stand of brassicas, i firmly believe that is caused by me planting them with cereal rye way to late in the season. I can tell you though that Stan Smith and the Ohio University Beef Extension has done the legwork on planting spring oats in the fall...

    That's a lot of ergot...

I've been working hay fields for the locals, sunburning through my long sleeves. I do have the skin of a princess though.

    That's a lot of ergot...

I wish I could have bought this white herd out when they were younger. 48 cows and after 2 years of culling for open and broken mouth i only have 10 left. They sure do good on fescue though, trying to keep all the heifers I can after the black cow wreck last year. These are the product of...

    That's a lot of ergot...

I'm not clipping. My hog is a POS and only mows at 1 height. Which is apparently the height to really cause eye problems. Trying to do the trampling with the cows this year. Daily move. He's a before and after. Should take another 50 days or so. I see them everyday so i'll know if they start...

    That's a lot of ergot...

I know the conditions were good last year and the fields were hot. That and the fact that I had 69 cows new to the farm, 36 of which were first calf heifers. It wasnt a fun summer. Finding a lot of ergot this year in the fescue. Not very excited, but I guess it will give a chance to see how...

Sorghum Sudan and a bush hog.

Don't spray with round-up. Orchard and Fescue quit growing in the summer, but they are never truely dormant, if it's green then glyphosate with kill it. Really in my area the only stands of grass anyone sprays with round-up is bermuda early in the spring.

    Tall fescue

Look on the drivers side in front of the hip. If its sunk in they arent eating. If its flush or even rounded out, they are full. If they fescue pasture that isnt very diverse. They may be getting warm and not eating in the heat of the day. I bet they just arent eating enough for you to notice...
