    Squeeze chute suggestions

I was in the same boat 8 years ago. We had an old filson manual headgate squeeze chute, and it was just too small, and floor needed replaced. I looked at about every manufacturer around. Arrowquip was by far my first choice, but also was overkill. We only have 25 cows or so. I ended up taking...

Electric fence fault finder and remote

I have one of the gallagher fault finders. What a time saver. I’ve become very effective using 2 offset insulators and/or insulated pliers to manipulate and repair a hot fence. Never knew there were remotes for chargers!

    What improvements are you making?

This was my observation when looking for a new squeeze chute...I looked at all the name brands. None of them are perfect. I ended up breaking our old heifer squeeze chute down, making it wider and taller, and adding useful features, and in reality, I can run it better by myself than any new one...

    What improvements are you making?

My dads broken leg actually. Cow ran him over, and I thought his rubber boot had partially come off.......I was wrong, his leg was pointing 90° off

    What improvements are you making?

To all of those improving working facilities, good call. After a discussion of the cost of an ER bill, followed by a broken leg due to poor facilities that very afternoon, we did the same and would never look back. Personally, our pastures got very overgrazed for the past 20 years. I’ve been...

    Feeding creep feed to herd

This might be a dumb question, but I have a bunch of 14% calf creep at the moment, and the only animals I have at that location are yearling bulls that are growing to be used next spring. Does anyone have advice on how to feed the creep as a supplement to 900 pound bulls over winter? I’m sure...

    Which cattle chute

Well, I ended up with a priefert s0191, found it for $2850. Got it set up, and lubed, and ran a few head through it. It seems to work fairly well, although the auto function of the headgate needs some tweaking. I just set it up with panels, and this really made me miss my crowding tub back home...

    Which cattle chute

Only used it once. Doesn’t concern me like the normal “self catching” ones. They can’t push through it, and if I don’t want to use it, I just don’t.

    Which cattle chute

Another Factor is a lot of the used squeeze chutes and head gates are the automatic catch kind. I have used those in the past and I will never own one. So that does decrease my options when looking at used.

    Which cattle chute

I did look for a headgate with that exact idea in mind. I couldn’t find anything less than about $300 and almost all of them were in pretty bad shape. I considered buying a new one and then building a chute. Another factor in wanting a decent set up is a few years ago my dad broke both bones in...

    Which cattle chute

I understand the idea of building something. Our chute back home was an old squeeze chute made for smaller cattle. I spent some time making it taller and wider along with other features such as a lever in the back to close the head gate which works awesome when you are by yourself. that being...

    Which cattle chute

I have a split operation, the home place has a tub and chute setup, my place,3 hours away, has nothing. I usually have between 7-10 head at my place, and I need a headgate or chute. I do some a.i. here. I’m only 32, so I don’t mind investing a little beyond my current needs. So, what kind of...

Feed for weaning and growing calves?

This is what i've done in the past. higher protein after weaning, and even using this as a finishing ration, ending on straight WSC (free choice hay of course). Seems like it works pretty well. I have a yearling bulls I'm holding back to cover the herd this winter. I currently have then on about...

    Mares Tail

It’s surely gone to seed already right? If so, there’s no advantage to spraying the mature plants.

What’s the best way to wean?!

Fenceline weaning works for us. Calves don’t fight fences as bad when they see the cow occasionally. They only bawl for a couple days.

    Bander recommendation?

Follow up here. I used the zip bandit for the first time this year on 500 pound bulls. I’ll be using them again. Simple, clean and easy.
