Any new info on this bull? Anyone have calves or seen calves? Seen the bull? Really intrigued by his pedigree and numbers. Don't need another bull for this breeding season, but maybe in the future.

7 & 7 Synch protocol anyone using it?

Had the vet out to preg check a few weeks ago. Looks like we ran 75% on the 7&7 group. Of the 4 head that didn’t get bred, 2 were the non-responders that we bred on time, one was the oldest cow in the herd that is probably going to be leaving this year, and the last one was a first calf heifer...

7 & 7 Synch protocol anyone using it?

We try to breed as close to 12 hrs after onset of heat as possible. During that short heat detection window, I am out there every 2-3 hours from 7 am to 10 pm. We will watch for heats at 21 days and rebreed AI, so I’ll have an idea of our conception rate in a couple weeks.

7 & 7 Synch protocol anyone using it?

I just finished breeding cows using this protocol and will definitely be using it again. Set up 16 head (7 first calf cows, 4 second calvers, and the balance ranging from 4-12). 14 of the 16 were in heat by hour 60, with 13 of those between 36-60. The two non-responders were bred on time at 72...

    New breeding season

Interested to hear about the Niagara calves. I wasn't impressed with the first handful I saw a couple years ago, but I've seen some good ones lately. We are using Hoover Dam and CCR Boulder (HD Simangus son) this year. Would like to find another good Hoover Dam son to use in the future. And...

    Best Baldy simmental/simangus bull

I’ve got 3 Longevity calves on the ground now and plans to breed him to about 20 cows in the next 3-4 weeks. One has some white on his face but that’s it. Gotta like a bull who is advertised by showing pictures of his dam and granddam in their teens and his feet.

Suggestions on AI for commercial herd

LMF Madison B752 Simangus bull from Select Sires. Saw him a lot when he was on test here in Alabama. As a yearling, he was one of the most impressive bulls I’ve ever seen. Perfect feet and plenty of muscle in a stout, moderate package. I’ve used him a good bit the last few years. Steers have...

    Cidr protocol expectations

Ive tried that protocol as well as using CIDRs to synchronize the cows into tighter windows for heat detection. If you are already doing heat detection, I would just extend your heat detection window by a couple days and get rid of the timed breeding. Anything that doesn’t respond, either set...

Fall Breeding What is everyone using..

Hoover Dam on a few select cows and heifers KCF Bennett Absolute and Rito 6EM3 of 4L1 Emblazon on heifers ASR Longevity Y184 (Sim) on all the grown cows.

Angus Bulls To Reduce Frame Size

Coleman Charlo 0256 Rito 6EM3 of Emblazon 4L1 Used both pretty heavily at home. Charlo DEFINITELY knocks them down a frame score, but they are incredibly thick and long. Steers had good growth too. I really like the 6EM3 heifers and cows I have. Moderate and pretty perfect phenotype. Steers...

Sowing Fescue and Rye Together Question

Would also avoid planting clover with your fescue in the first year. I tend to want as little competition for the fescue as possible in year one, let it establish a good root system, then plant clover in year two. Also, if you plant clover in the first year, you lose all of your weed control...

    AI Bulls-Angus

If you are after the performance and carcass traits, I really like Resistol. I have a son at home with perfect feet and lot of power. See a lot of really good carcass data on a pile of his calves.

Why no love for the Herefords?

My experience in the feedyard with retained ownership is that the Hereford sired calves and purebreds are below average on growth, don't reach the same finish weight, and will have 20-25% few USDA Choice carcasses. Fed calves sired by bulls from several respected breeders, all the same thing. I...

    Best Poly Wire with reel

We use that setup and some of the fancy Gallagher geared reels. I'd rather use the cheap extension cord reel. We have some that are going on 6 years old, in the weather every single day, and still work just fine. Gallagher geared reel is too dang heavy when you are moving fence every day or two.

    Anyone Creep Feeding Calves?

They average 590#. Big steers were 687# and the heifers were 548#. After 42 days, the little steers were 750#, big steers were 784#, and the heifers were 630#. The steers will head to Kansas in about 30 more days, and I think they will be averaging 825-850. We got a little concerned with the...

    Anyone Creep Feeding Calves?

Just looking back at some post weaning gain data to update my above post. Steers that stayed on the creep feeder after weaning gained 3.93#/day for 42 days. Steers and heifers that stayed on creep for 8 days then transitioned to 1% BW Corn gluten feed and crabgrass grazing gained 2.04#/day for...

Our first Simangus calf by CCR Boulder

How’d this calf (or any other Boulders) turn out? Thinking about using him this fall.

    Anyone Creep Feeding Calves?

Tried creep feeding this year for the first time. We had some health issues at weaning last year, and I felt like some of it might have been due to the stress of weaning. This year we provided creep for the calves starting 5 weeks prior to weaning and then they stayed on the self feeder 8 days...

Simmental Association for a Commercial guy

On the commercial side, do you think it is worth it? We collect tons of data on our commercial calves from weaning weights through full carcass data. Right now we don't have a ton of Sim-influence, but we are headed that direction. I feel like the data management and ability to generate EPD's...

Simmental Association for a Commercial guy

Long time without posting, but still been lurking around. Had a question for the board to see if anyone has any experience with this. We have a small commercial herd, calve out 20-30 cows a year. Utilize AI in a pretty big way and every calf produced in the last three years has either become a...
